P0134: O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is sending a flat signal with no switching, as if it were dead or disconnected.
What P0134 means
P0134 means the computer expected to see the upstream oxygen sensor switching once the engine warmed up, but the signal just sat there. For a standard zirconia sensor that usually means it is stuck around 0.45 volts, the bias voltage the computer applies when nothing is coming back. The sensor may be dead, its wiring may be open, or its heater may have failed so the tip never gets hot enough to work. That is why P0134 often shows up alongside a heater code like P0135. Without this feedback, the computer goes back to preset fuel tables, which can waste fuel and raise emissions. Shops check whether the heater has power and ground, measure heater resistance, then watch the signal while snapping the throttle or adding propane. If the sensor never moves, it is replaced. If the sensor moves at the connector but not at the computer, they repair the wiring.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Worse gas mileage
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Possible black smoke from rich running
- Failed emissions test
Most common causes
- Dead oxygen sensor
- Open signal or ground wire
- Failed heater keeping the sensor cold
- Unplugged or corroded connector
- Exhaust leak at the sensor
What to check yourself first
Find the bank 1 sensor 1 connector and make sure it is latched and not melted. Look for a check engine code for the heater circuit too, like P0135, which can cause a no activity reading. Inspect the wire for damage from road debris.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace oxygen sensor | $440-$523 | When the sensor stays flat even when hot and with fuel added. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For an open wire or connector, often damaged by heat or road debris. |
| Check engine light diagnosis at a shop | $125-$183 | Checks heater operation and exhaust leaks before parts. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
