P0136: O2 Sensor Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
The computer has found a problem with the signal from the downstream oxygen sensor on bank 1, the one after the catalytic converter.
What P0136 means
The downstream oxygen sensor, bank 1 sensor 2, sits after the catalytic converter. Its main job is to grade the converter. A healthy converter stores oxygen, so the downstream signal should stay fairly steady while the upstream sensor switches quickly. P0136 is a general circuit fault for that downstream sensor, meaning its signal is out of range or not behaving as the computer expects. KBB notes it will not lock up your engine or stop you from driving, but it should be diagnosed. Common causes are a worn sensor, wiring damaged by heat or debris, and exhaust leaks that let outside air reach the sensor. Since the downstream sensor has little effect on fueling on many cars, drivers often notice nothing. Shops compare the upstream and downstream signals, check the wiring and heater, and look for leaks. Getting this sensor right matters because a bad downstream reading can lead to an unnecessary catalytic converter replacement.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Usually no change in how the car runs
- Possible failed emissions test
- May appear with catalytic converter codes
- Slight drop in fuel economy on some cars
Most common causes
- Failing downstream oxygen sensor
- Damaged or corroded wiring
- Exhaust leak near the sensor
- Catalytic converter problem
- Wrong replacement sensor installed
What to check yourself first
Bank 1 Sensor 2 is behind the catalytic converter on the cylinder 1 side. Check its wiring and connector under the car for damage from heat or road debris. Look for rust holes or loose clamps in the exhaust around it.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace oxygen sensor | $440-$523 | Downstream sensors are often easier to reach from under the car. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For damaged wiring, which often runs low along the exhaust. |
| Check engine light diagnosis at a shop | $125-$183 | Separates a sensor problem from a converter or exhaust leak. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
