CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODE

P0401: Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Flow Insufficient Detected

The EGR system is not sending as much exhaust back into the engine as the computer expects, usually because passages are clogged with carbon.

Get it checked soonMost cars drive normally, but KBB advises going straight to a service center. Avoid hard acceleration and towing if you hear pinging.

What P0401 means

P0401 is one of the most common EGR codes. RepairPal lists restrictions in the EGR passages from carbon buildup as the first cause, along with a defective valve, lack of vacuum or electrical signal, a failed vacuum solenoid and problems with the feedback sensors that report EGR flow. During its test, the computer opens the EGR valve and expects manifold pressure or a flow sensor to change. When the change is too small, it concludes the flow is insufficient. Over time, carbon in the exhaust coats the valve and the small passages that feed the intake, especially on engines that do lots of short trips. Without enough EGR, combustion runs hotter, so NOx rises and you might hear pinging when accelerating. Shops command the valve open with a scan tool or vacuum pump while watching MAP and RPM. If the engine barely reacts, the passages are likely blocked. Cleaning the ports and valve fixes many cases without new parts.

Common symptoms

Most common causes

  1. Carbon buildup in EGR passages or ports
  2. EGR valve stuck closed
  3. No vacuum or electrical signal to the EGR valve
  4. Failed EGR vacuum solenoid
  5. Faulty EGR feedback sensor such as a DPFE or position sensor
  6. Cracked EGR pressure hoses

What to check yourself first

Inspect any rubber hoses connected to the EGR valve or its pressure sensor for cracks. Ford vehicles often use a DPFE sensor with two small hoses that crack with age. On vacuum valves, check for vacuum at the valve with the engine warm at about 2,500 RPM.

Typical fixes and what they cost

FixTypical costNote
Diagnosis and EGR passage cleaning$125-$183Cleaning carbon from EGR ports is often the real fix and costs less than parts.
Replace EGR valve$489-$632If the valve does not open when commanded.
Replace EGR vacuum control solenoid$129-$151When the vacuum control solenoid has failed.
Replace EGR valve position sensor$107-$133For a faulty EGR position sensor.

Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
