P0410: Secondary Air Injection System
The engine computer has found a problem with the system that pumps fresh air into the exhaust after a cold start to cut emissions.
What P0410 means
When an engine first starts cold, it runs rich and the catalytic converter is not hot enough to work yet. The secondary air injection system blows fresh air into the exhaust for the first minute or two so the extra fuel burns off and the converter heats up faster. RepairPal describes the system as an air pump, tubes, a control solenoid and check valves. P0410 means the computer has found a general fault in that system. Common causes include a failed pump, a stuck check valve, a bad relay or fuse, and carbon clogging the air passages. A leaking check valve lets hot, wet exhaust back into the pump, which often kills it. KBB notes the system should not affect your car safe operation but can cause you to fail emissions testing. Shops listen for the pump on a cold start, check the relay and fuse, and watch the upstream oxygen sensor go lean when air flows. No change means air is not getting through.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Loud whine or roar from the air pump on cold start
- Air pump not running at all
- Failed emissions test
- Hesitation on acceleration in some cases
Most common causes
- Failed secondary air pump
- Stuck or leaking air check valve
- Failed air pump relay or fuse
- Faulty air control solenoid or vacuum lines
- Carbon blocked air passages
- Water damage to the pump
What to check yourself first
On a cold start, listen for the air pump running for about a minute; it often sounds like a loud vacuum cleaner. Check the air pump fuse and relay. Look for cracked hoses between the pump and the exhaust.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace secondary air injection pump | $572-$698 | Pumps can fail from water getting inside them through a bad check valve. |
| Replace secondary air control (check) valve | $613-$767 | RepairPal lists defective check valves as a common cause. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For a failed relay, fuse or wiring. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
