P2A00: O2 Sensor Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
The upstream oxygen or air-fuel sensor on bank 1 is giving readings that do not make sense to the computer.
What P2A00 means
P2A00 is common on vehicles that use wideband air-fuel ratio sensors upstream, including many Toyota, Lexus, Hyundai and Kia models. These sensors report the mixture as a current rather than a simple switching voltage. RepairPal explains that P2A00 sets when the computer detects a failure of the sensor or of the information it sends, and lists an exhaust leak, oxygen sensor failure, computer failure and wiring issues as causes. In practice, the computer is comparing the sensor reading to what it expects based on airflow, fuel delivery and its own commands. If the sensor seems slow, stuck, biased or out of range compared with that model, it sets the code. KBB notes there are usually no immediate symptoms but warns against driving with it because the engine may be running lean or rich. Shops check for exhaust leaks, look at fuel trims and run the sensor through an active test with a scan tool. A failing sensor is the most common fix.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Decreased engine performance
- Increased fuel consumption
- Rough idle on some vehicles
- Failed emissions test
Most common causes
- Failing upstream air-fuel ratio or oxygen sensor
- Exhaust leak ahead of the sensor
- Wiring or connector problem
- Engine running rich or lean from another fault
- Engine computer fault (rare)
What to check yourself first
Check for exhaust leaks at the exhaust manifold and front pipe. Inspect the sensor connector for damage or corrosion. Note whether lean or rich codes appear at the same time.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace oxygen sensor | $440-$523 | RepairPal lists oxygen sensor replacement as the common repair. |
| Exhaust leak test | $61-$90 | Finds exhaust leaks that skew the reading. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring or connector faults. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
