U0155: Lost Communication With Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Control Module
Other modules have stopped receiving messages from the instrument cluster, the gauge panel behind the steering wheel.
What U0155 means
The instrument panel cluster shows your speed, fuel level, engine temperature and warning lights. On modern cars, almost everything it displays arrives as network messages from other modules, and it sends messages back, such as odometer data. U0155 means one or more modules have stopped receiving messages from the cluster. When that happens, gauges may freeze or fall to zero, warning lights may flash, and the display may go blank. Driving without a working speedometer, fuel gauge or warning lights is risky, so do not put it off. Common causes include a blown fuse, a bad ground, a loose connector behind the cluster and network wiring faults. Weak battery voltage can also make the cluster drop off the network during cranking. Some vehicles have known cluster failures that makers covered with service bulletins or extended warranties. Shops check power and ground at the cluster, inspect the connector and test the network. Replacement clusters must usually be programmed with the correct mileage.
Common symptoms
- Gauges dead, frozen or dropping to zero
- Warning lights flashing or all on
- Dash display blank
- Chimes or warnings not working
- Other modules may set codes too
Most common causes
- Blown fuse or power feed to the cluster
- Bad ground at the cluster
- Loose or corroded cluster connector
- Damaged network wiring
- Failed instrument cluster
- Weak battery or low voltage
What to check yourself first
Check the fuses for the instrument cluster in the interior fuse box. Have the battery tested. If the gauges work sometimes and not others, note whether bumps or temperature seem to affect it, which can point to a loose connector.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Network (CAN bus) electrical diagnosis | $122-$179 | Network faults are usually found by checking power, ground and the two CAN bus wires at each module. |
| Replace battery | $456-$493 | A weak battery or low voltage is a very common cause of communication codes. |
| Check engine light diagnosis at a shop | $125-$183 | A full network scan shows which modules can and cannot see the cluster. If the cluster itself has failed, repair or replacement costs vary widely by vehicle and often need programming for the mileage. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
