P0101: Mass or Volume Air Flow "A" Circuit Range/Performance
The MAF sensor reading does not make sense compared to what the engine computer expects for the current RPM and throttle.
What P0101 means
P0101 is not about a broken wire. It means the MAF sensor is sending a signal, but the value is out of line with what the engine computer calculates from RPM, throttle position and manifold pressure. RepairPal names large vacuum leaks, split intake boots, defective intake gaskets and a dirty sensing wire as common causes, along with a faulty sensor. Because the MAF tells the computer how much fuel to inject, a skewed reading can also set fuel trim and oxygen sensor codes. KBB notes that air metering codes will not stop your vehicle right away, but they should be resolved soon. Shops start with freeze frame data and a test drive while watching airflow in grams per second against load and RPM. They inspect the intake ducting, smoke test the intake and check the sensor connector. Cleaning the sensor solves a good share of cases. Replacing it is the last step once leaks and wiring are ruled out.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hesitation, coughing or lack of power
- Rough idle
- Black smoke and poor gas mileage in some cases
- Lean or rich codes like P0171 or P0172 may appear too
Most common causes
- Dirty or contaminated MAF sensor wire
- Torn intake air boot or vacuum leak after the sensor
- Faulty MAF sensor
- Wiring or connector problem in the MAF circuit
- Oiled aftermarket air filter contaminating the sensor
- Engine computer software needing an update
What to check yourself first
Inspect the rubber intake boot between the MAF and throttle body, flexing it to find hidden cracks. Spray the sensor element with MAF cleaner only, never brake or carb cleaner, and let it dry. If you use an oiled cotton air filter, avoid over-oiling it.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Clean the MAF sensor yourself | $15-$20 | Cleaning fixes many P0101 codes. A can of CRC MAF cleaner costs about $17. |
| Smoke test for intake leaks | $61-$90 | Smoke testing finds intake boot cracks and vacuum leaks that skew the reading. |
| Replace mass airflow (MAF) sensor | $274-$381 | If cleaning and leak checks do not fix it. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For connector or wiring faults. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
