The Sonata was the poster child for Hyundai's Theta II engine trouble. If your Sonata started knocking, lost power on the highway, or seized outright, there's a very good chance Hyundai already agreed to pay for it. Here's how to find out before you hand anybody your credit card.

What goes wrong

Recall filings for the 2011-2014 Sonata describe metal debris left in the crankshaft during manufacturing. That debris can block oil from reaching the connecting rod bearings. The bearing wears, starts to knock, and can eventually fail and stall the car. The 2015 recall alone (15V-568) covered about 470,000 2011-2012 Sonatas built at Hyundai's Alabama plant.

Common signs:

  • A metallic, rhythmic knock that gets faster as the engine revs
  • Check engine light or oil pressure light
  • Loss of power or stalling, sometimes at speed
  • Metal flakes in the oil at oil changes
  • Burning more oil than it used to

KSDS: the free update you want

KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System) is software a Hyundai dealer installs for free. It listens for the vibration of a failing rod bearing. If it hears one, the check engine light flashes and the engine goes into a protection mode capped at around 1,800 to 2,000 RPM so it doesn't blow up on the highway. You can still steer, brake and get to a dealer.

On the 2.0T and 2.4L GDI cars, you need KSDS installed to get the lifetime warranty. If you've never had it done, get it done. It's free, and it's the difference between a free engine and a very expensive one.

What about the 2020-2021 1.6T?

The newer Sonata's 1.6-liter turbo has a different issue. Hyundai's bulletin 21-EM-010H says a check engine light with a popping noise, a strange smell from the engine bay, rough running or reduced power can come from burnt high-pressure injector tip seals. The fix is a new injector, not just a seal. It applies to 2020-2021 Sonatas built from October 22, 2019 to August 28, 2020, and the bulletin lists it as a normal warranty repair. These cars are young enough that many are still under Hyundai's powertrain warranty, so check your warranty booklet before paying for anything.

Easy things to do first

  • Check the oil level right now. Low oil speeds up bearing damage.
  • Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for any open recalls.
  • Ask Hyundai (855-371-9460) whether the KSDS update and lifetime warranty are on file for your VIN.
  • Find your oil change receipts. Hyundai can review claims for neglect, so paperwork helps.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Is KSDS installed on this VIN?"
  • "Is the short block covered under the lifetime engine warranty or the Engine II settlement?"
  • "Is the tow and a rental covered while it's in the shop?"
  • "If you deny it, can I have that in writing?" (the settlement includes an arbitration process, with a 60-day window to dispute a denial)

Is it worth fixing?

If it's covered, yes, no question. A free short block can give an otherwise solid Sonata a lot more life. If coverage is denied and the car is older and high-mileage, get a written quote and compare it with the car's value. Just don't sell it for scrap before you've made that phone call to Hyundai.
