The 2021 redesign gave the Yukon an electronic brake setup that also runs ABS, traction control, stability control and the automatic emergency braking. When it's healthy you never think about it. When it throws a fault, the truck can lock you into a low speed limit and the pedal can feel like a brick. That's a very different problem from squeaky pads, so let's split the two.

What owners report (NHTSA complaints)

  • A 2023 Yukon Denali with 53,456 miles came in with a Service 4WD light and the dealer pulled brake codes P25A2, C0511, C0517, C1595 and C1596, which the owner says pointed to brake control module and wheel speed sensor faults.
  • Another 2023 owner reported the brakes failing to engage with a "do not exceed 35 mph" warning, traced to a faulty brake system control module.
  • A 2023 owner in Chicago reported a hard pedal and a "Maximum Speed 43 MPH" warning after the truck sat overnight at about 10°F.
  • A 2022 owner said ABS, traction control and stability control all became disabled after a dealer recall visit and software update.

CarComplaints shows 12 brake complaints for the 2021 Yukon alone, across service brakes, ESC and ABS warning light categories. Not every truck does this, but it's a pattern worth knowing.

What to do when the warning pops up

  • Slow down and get off the road safely. The pedal may need a lot more force.
  • Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir once you're parked. Low fluid plus a warning means a leak until proven otherwise.
  • Note the exact messages (take a photo). Dealers often can't reproduce intermittent faults, so evidence helps.
  • Ask the dealer to save the codes and freeze-frame data. Codes like C-codes and P25A2 tell the tech where to look.
  • Don't keep driving it. Several owners got stuck after the problem came back.

Normal brake wear: what it costs

YourMechanic's national averages are lower (about $204 for pads and $379 for rotors), but its year-specific quotes for these newer trucks are the better guide. A brake control module or wheel speed sensor job isn't listed by these estimators, so get a written quote, and remember the basic warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles.

Simple signs it's just worn brakes

  • Squeal from the wear tab when braking
  • Grinding (pads are gone, rotors next)
  • Pulsing pedal or a shaky wheel when braking from highway speed
  • Truck pulls to one side when stopping (possible sticking caliper)

DIY or shop?

Pads and rotors are a reasonable DIY on a Yukon if you have heavy-duty stands and a torque wrench. Anything with a brake failure message, a module, sensors or bleeding the electronic system belongs at a shop with a factory-level scan tool.

What to ask before paying

  • "Which codes did you find, and is this covered by warranty or a recall?"
  • "Did you check wheel speed sensor wiring before replacing the module?"
  • "For pads: are the rotors above minimum thickness?"
  • "Is the quote per axle?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Pads and rotors are routine money on a truck like this. Electronic brake faults are a safety issue first and a money issue second, and on a newer Yukon they may be covered. Push for a real diagnosis, not a code clear.
