CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODE

P0113: Intake Air Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit High

The intake air temperature sensor voltage is too high, so the computer thinks the incoming air is extremely cold.

Not urgentYes, it is usually fine to drive. KBB notes that IAT codes are not serious enough to stop you from driving, but fix it soon.

What P0113 means

P0113 is the opposite of P0112. The intake air temperature signal is stuck above roughly 4.5 volts, which the computer reads as very cold air. KBB points out that a high circuit reading of around 5 volts tells the computer the air is about minus 40 degrees F, which is really a sign of an open circuit, not cold weather. That is why an unplugged connector after an air filter change is one of the most common causes. Others include a broken wire, a corroded pin or a failed sensor. On many cars the IAT sensor lives inside the MAF sensor housing. With the wrong air temperature, the computer adds extra fuel and may adjust timing, which can cause hard starting and lower mileage. Shops check the live IAT reading, wiggle the harness and measure voltage and resistance at the sensor. Unplugging the sensor and jumping the signal to ground with a test lead should make the reading swing hot, which proves the wiring is good.

Common symptoms

Most common causes

  1. IAT sensor unplugged or connector loose
  2. Open circuit in the sensor wiring
  3. Failed IAT sensor
  4. Faulty MAF sensor with a built-in IAT
  5. Corroded connector pins

What to check yourself first

Make sure the IAT or MAF connector was not left unplugged after an air filter change, which is a very common cause. Check for a broken wire. A scan tool reading of about minus 40 degrees F means the computer sees an open circuit.

Typical fixes and what they cost

FixTypical costNote
Replace intake air temperature sensor$119-$142For a standalone sensor, usually in the air box or intake tube.
Replace mass airflow (MAF) sensor$274-$381If the IAT is part of the MAF sensor assembly.
Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault$122-$179For an open wire or loose connector.

Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
