P0443: Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit

The engine computer has found an electrical problem with the EVAP purge valve or its wiring.

Not urgentUsually safe to drive. Have it fixed soon, especially if you notice rough idle or hard starting after refueling.

What P0443 means

The purge valve is an electrically controlled solenoid that opens to let engine vacuum pull stored fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the intake. The engine computer switches it on and off and watches the circuit. RepairPal explains that P0443 means improper purge operation caused by a malfunctioning purge valve or a shorted or open valve circuit. So this code points first to the valve coil, the wiring and the connector. A blown fuse can also cut power to the valve. If the valve is stuck closed, vapors are not purged and you may smell fuel. If it is stuck open, vapor floods the intake at idle and can cause rough running, especially after a fill up. Shops measure the valve resistance, check for power and the control signal from the computer with the key on, and command the valve with a scan tool while listening for a click. A new valve or a wiring fix usually clears the code.

Common symptoms

Most common causes

  1. Failed purge valve solenoid coil
  2. Open or shorted wire to the purge valve
  3. Corroded or loose connector
  4. Blown fuse for the purge circuit
  5. Engine computer driver fault (rare)

What to check yourself first

Find the purge valve and check the connector for corrosion or a broken latch. Measure the solenoid resistance with a meter; an open or very low reading means a bad valve. Check the fuse that feeds it.

Typical fixes and what they cost

FixTypical costNote
Replace EVAP purge valve$210-$251RepairPal notes P0443 often comes from a physically bad purge valve or an open or shorted circuit.
Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault$122-$179For wiring or connector faults.
Check engine light diagnosis at a shop$125-$183Confirms whether the valve or circuit is at fault.

Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
