P0441: Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow
The EVAP purge flow, the stored fuel vapor being drawn into the engine, is not what the computer expects.
What P0441 means
During normal driving, the engine computer opens the purge valve so engine vacuum pulls fuel vapor from the charcoal canister into the intake. RepairPal explains that P0441 indicates improper purge flow, which the computer usually detects by watching tank pressure, fuel trims or idle speed when it opens the valve. If nothing changes, flow is too low; if things change when the valve should be closed, flow is too high. A purge valve stuck open or closed is the most common cause. Cracked hoses, a canister clogged with charcoal or dirt, and a faulty tank pressure sensor can also cause it. A purge valve stuck open can draw vapor into the engine at idle and cause rough running or hard starting after a fill up, and some cars may smell of fuel. Shops command the purge valve with a scan tool while watching tank pressure, test it with a vacuum pump and smoke test the lines. Fixing it usually means a valve or hose.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Usually no driveability change
- Fuel odor in some cases
- Rough idle if the purge valve is stuck open
- Hard starting right after refueling on some cars
Most common causes
- Faulty purge valve stuck open or closed
- Cracked or disconnected purge hose
- Clogged charcoal canister
- Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
- Wiring problem to the purge valve
What to check yourself first
Find the purge valve, usually on the engine side of the EVAP line near the intake. With the engine off, try blowing through it gently; most should not pass air when unpowered. Check the hoses on both sides for cracks.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace EVAP purge valve | $210-$251 | The most common fix for purge flow codes. |
| EVAP smoke test to find the leak | $61-$90 | A smoke test is the standard way to find EVAP leaks. |
| Replace EVAP canister (includes vent valve on many cars) | $558-$643 | If charcoal is breaking down or the canister is clogged. |
| Replace fuel tank pressure sensor | $356-$457 | When the pressure sensor gives readings that do not match a gauge. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
