P0451: Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance

The fuel tank pressure sensor, which the EVAP leak test relies on, is giving readings that do not make sense.

Not urgentUsually safe to drive. KBB says it often has no impact on performance, but get it inspected if you notice a gas smell.

What P0451 means

The fuel tank pressure sensor tracks tiny positive and negative pressure changes in the tank and EVAP lines. The computer uses it during the EVAP monitor to tell whether the system holds a seal. RepairPal explains that P0451 means the sensor is indicating pressure change values outside specification during the EVAP test or normal operation. Common causes include a sensor that has drifted or gone erratic, wiring trouble, and hoses or valves that create unexpected pressure swings. Overfilling the tank can send liquid fuel into the vapor lines, which confuses the sensor and can damage the canister. KBB notes that P0451 usually does not affect driveability but can appear alongside more serious codes. Shops watch the sensor reading with the gas cap off, where it should read zero, and then with the system sealed. A reading that jumps around or does not return to zero points to the sensor. Replacing it often requires lowering the tank on some vehicles, which adds labor.

Common symptoms

Most common causes

  1. Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
  2. Wiring or connector problem
  3. Blocked or kinked EVAP hose to the sensor
  4. Faulty vent valve causing pressure swings
  5. Overfilling the tank after the pump clicks off

What to check yourself first

Stop topping off the tank after the pump clicks off, since liquid fuel can get into the EVAP lines. Check the sensor connector, usually on top of the tank or near the canister, for corrosion. Look for kinked vent hoses.

Typical fixes and what they cost

FixTypical costNote
Replace fuel tank pressure sensor$356-$457The common repair when the sensor reading is erratic.
Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault$122-$179For corroded connectors at the tank.
Replace EVAP canister (includes vent valve on many cars)$558-$643If a stuck vent valve is causing odd pressure readings.

Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
