P0452: Evaporative Emission System Pressure Sensor/Switch Low

The fuel tank pressure sensor signal is lower than the computer allows, as if there were strong vacuum in the tank.

Not urgentYes, it is usually safe to drive. Fix it before your next emissions test.

What P0452 means

RepairPal explains that P0452 means the EVAP pressure sensor is indicating pressure values below specification. Like most sensors, it gets a 5 volt reference and returns a signal voltage that changes with pressure. A signal stuck too low reads as strong vacuum. That can come from a sensor that has failed, a signal wire shorted to ground, or an open reference wire. Less often, it is real: a purge valve stuck open can pull hard vacuum on the tank while the engine runs. A simple first test is to open the gas cap, which should bring tank pressure to zero. If the scan tool still shows low pressure, the problem is electrical or the sensor. If it reads zero with the cap off but drops far once sealed, the purge valve may be leaking. Shops then check for 5 volts and ground at the sensor connector. The sensor is often mounted on the tank or on the canister, and some jobs require dropping the tank.

Common symptoms

Most common causes

  1. Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor
  2. Signal wire shorted to ground
  3. Open 5 volt reference wire
  4. Corroded connector at the tank
  5. Real high vacuum from a stuck purge valve

What to check yourself first

Remove the gas cap with the engine off and check the scan tool reading; it should read near zero. If it reads strongly negative with the cap off, the sensor or wiring is bad. Inspect the connector for corrosion.

Typical fixes and what they cost

FixTypical costNote
Replace fuel tank pressure sensor$356-$457When the sensor reads low with good wiring.
Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault$122-$179For a short to ground or open reference circuit.
Replace EVAP purge valve$210-$251If a purge valve stuck open is creating real vacuum.

Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
