P0507: Idle Air Control System RPM Higher Than Expected
The engine is idling faster than the computer is targeting, even after it tries to bring the idle down.
What P0507 means
P0507 is the opposite of P0506. The engine computer is trying to lower the idle by closing the idle valve or throttle, but the RPM stays above target. The usual reason is extra air getting into the engine that the computer does not control. A vacuum leak from a cracked hose, a split intake boot, a leaking PCV valve or an intake gasket lets air in after the throttle, so the engine idles higher no matter what the idle control does. An idle valve stuck open, an electronic throttle body that does not close fully, or carbon that keeps the throttle from seating can do the same. A high idle makes the car creep harder in drive and can cause harsh shifts into gear. Shops smoke test the intake, check the throttle position at idle on a scan tool, inspect the throttle body and run an idle relearn if needed. Fixing a vacuum leak often clears lean codes that show up at the same time.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- High idle, often 1,000 RPM or more when warm
- Surging idle
- Car creeps harder in drive
- Harsh shifts into gear
Most common causes
- Vacuum leak letting in unmetered air
- Cracked intake boot or PCV hose
- Faulty idle air control valve stuck open
- Electronic throttle body problem
- Carbon preventing the throttle from closing
- Idle relearn needed
What to check yourself first
Listen for a hiss around the intake with the engine idling. Inspect the rubber intake boot and PCV hoses for cracks. Make sure the throttle plate closes fully and the gas pedal is not stuck on a floor mat.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke test for vacuum leaks | $61-$90 | Vacuum leaks are the most common cause of high idle codes. |
| Replace throttle body | $623-$766 | If the throttle body does not close fully. |
| Replace PCV valve | $124-$173 | If the PCV valve or hose is leaking. |
| Replace intake manifold gasket | $683-$834 | When the leak is at the intake manifold gasket. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
