Picture this: you buy a new battery, the Tahoe starts great for a week, then it's dead again in the driveway. That's the classic sign of a parasitic drain, something that keeps pulling power after you shut it off. Batteries don't fix drains. Finding the drain does.

Known drain #1: the hands-free liftgate (2022-2024)

GM bulletin PIT5973D covers 2022-2024 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade with the Hands Free Liftgate option (RPO TC2). The liftgate module (K171) can keep sending false wake-up requests to the body control module (BCM). The BCM software then magnifies the draw. GM says the draw can exceed 10 amps, which can flatten a battery fast.

Tell-tale signs:

  • It's worse when the Tahoe is left unlocked or a key fob is left inside.
  • The power liftgate opens by itself when the fob is nearby, with no button press or kick.

GM's fix: update the BCM software, and replace the K171 module if it's the source. A quick test GM gives techs: pull fuse F35RA (10A) in the rear fuse block and see if the drain stops. That disables the hands-free kick feature (and trailer tire pressure monitoring, if equipped) but the regular power liftgate still works.

Known drain #2: third-row seat switch (2021-2023)

GM TechLink describes some 2021-2023 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models with a low battery or no-crank after sitting a day or more. A draw test shows 200-300 milliamps. The cause: a third-row power folding seat switch in the cargo area that isn't fully plugged in, which keeps the BCM from going to sleep. Bulletin PIT6063 has the details.

Easy things to try tonight

  • Lock it and keep fobs away. Don't leave a spare fob in the glovebox or a jacket in the back seat. GM specifically says unlocked trucks and fobs inside make the liftgate drain worse.
  • Turn on passive locking in the settings menu so it locks itself when you walk away.
  • Unplug aftermarket gadgets. Dash cams, trackers and plug-in chargers wired to always-on power are common culprits.
  • Test the battery. Most parts stores test for free. An old battery that can't hold a charge looks a lot like a drain.
  • Don't panic about voltage. Owners on TahoeYukonForum point out these trucks use regulated voltage control, so readings of roughly 12.2-12.6 volts while driving can be normal.

How a shop finds a drain

GM's own guidance (TechLink) says modules can take 30 minutes or longer to fall asleep after you shut off the truck, with most entering an initial sleep in about 10 minutes. A healthy GM vehicle typically settles below about 20 milliamps after that. At 40 mA or more, techs hunt for the circuit by checking voltage drop across each fuse, which avoids waking modules by pulling fuses one by one.

If a shop tells you "we tested it for five minutes and it's fine," that's not long enough.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Have PIT5973D and PIT6063 been checked on my VIN?"
  • "Is my BCM on the latest software?"
  • "How long did you let the truck sleep before measuring the draw?"
  • "Which circuit or module was drawing current?"
  • "Was the battery replaced with the correct type for this truck?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes, and it's often cheap. On a 2021-2024 Tahoe still under warranty, the known fixes should cost nothing. Replacing batteries over and over is the expensive route, because deep discharges shorten battery life every time.
