A full-size SUV that bangs into gear, hesitates pulling away, or flashes a wrench light is stressful, especially when it's hauling the whole family. The good news is that most Expedition 10-speed complaints have a known playbook. Here's how to tell what you're dealing with.
Which Expeditions this applies to
Every Expedition since the 2018 model year uses Ford's 10-speed automatic. The fourth generation (2018-2024) and the fifth generation (2025 and later) both pair it with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. The bulletins and the recall below are specific to certain years, so check your model year against each one.
Problem 1: harsh, delayed or clunky shifts (TSB 24-2101)
TSB 24-2101 replaced an earlier bulletin (23-2350) and covers the 10R80 in the 2017-2020 F-150, 2018-2021 Expedition, Navigator and Mustang, and 2019-2023 Ranger. Symptoms include harsh or delayed engagement into gear, harsh or delayed shifts, and sometimes a check engine light with codes like P0751, P0752, P0756, P2700 or P0729.
| Step | What the dealer does |
|---|---|
| 1 | Scans for stored transmission codes |
| 2 | No listed codes? Reprograms the transmission strategy and runs the adaptive learning drive cycle |
| 3 | Codes present or problem returns? Overhauls (cleans and inspects) the main control valve body, then relearns |
| 4 | Still there, and built on or before Aug. 15, 2022? Removes the transmission and replaces the CDF clutch cylinder |
Ford lists three possible causes: the solenoid ID strategy, sticking valves in the valve body, and axial movement of the CDF clutch cylinder sleeve. After any reset or relearn, the bulletin warns shifts may feel firmer for several days. That's expected, not a new problem.
Problem 2: rolls in park, won't go into park, or stuck in park (recall 26S48)
In June 2026 Ford recalled about 741,000 vehicles, including 2018-2021 Expeditions, plus 2018-2021 Navigators, 2020-2021 Explorers and Aviators, and the 2021 F-150. CarComplaints reports Ford's explanation: the valve body separator plate can restrict flow to the park valve, so the park pawl can briefly engage while you're driving. That can damage park system parts.
Owners may notice the vehicle moving after selecting Park, refusing to shift into Park, or getting stuck in Park, sometimes with a wrench light. The remedy is a powertrain control module update, a transmission inspection, and replacement of any damaged parts, all free. NHTSA's record shows interim letters went out in July 2026 and the remedy is expected around April 2027.
There's also a small follow-up recall for some 2019 Expeditions (NHTSA 25V886): the "transmission not in Park" warning and chime played too briefly after an earlier repair. It's a free instrument cluster software update.
Easy things to check first
- Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows open recalls, including 26V402.
- Read the codes. A basic OBD-II scanner tells you whether there are stored transmission codes. Codes usually mean you'll skip straight to the valve body step.
- Ask whether the TSB software was already done. If not, the reflash and relearn is the cheapest real fix.
- Check the fluid service history. RepairPal lists an Expedition transmission fluid change at $445 to $587 for 2023-2024 and $435 to $577 for 2025-2026. It won't cure a calibration problem, but old fluid doesn't help.
- Give the relearn time. The 10-speed adapts to how you drive, so expect a few days of firmer shifts after any reset.
What it can cost
| Situation | Who | Likely cost |
|---|---|---|
| Park pawl recall 26S48 | Ford dealer | $0 |
| TSB 24-2101 reprogram and relearn, under powertrain warranty | Ford dealer | Usually $0, confirm with your warranty |
| Same, out of warranty | Ford dealer | Diagnostic and programming time, get a quote |
| Valve body overhaul or CDF cylinder, out of warranty | Dealer or transmission shop | Get a written quote, this is the big one |
| Transmission fluid change, 2023-2026 | Independent shop | $435 to $587 (RepairPal) |
What to ask the dealer
- "Is recall 26S48 open on my VIN, and is the remedy available yet?"
- "Has TSB 24-2101 or 23-2350 already been performed?"
- "Which codes are stored?"
- "Will you start with the reprogram before recommending the valve body?"
- "Is this covered by my powertrain warranty or any extended coverage?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes, in almost every case. An Expedition is worth too much to sell over a shift-quality complaint, and the first fix is often just software. The park pawl recall costs you nothing but patience. If your truck is past warranty and the dealer jumps straight to a five-figure transmission quote, get a second opinion from a reputable transmission shop and ask why the TSB steps were skipped.
