Few things ruin a morning faster than pressing the start button and getting a dark dash and a sad click. The current Sportage (the fifth generation that arrived for the 2023 model year) is a pretty solid SUV, but it does have a couple of battery quirks that are worth knowing about before you pay for parts you might not need.

First, which Sportage do you have?

This matters more than you'd think. The gas Sportage uses a conventional 12V battery. The Sportage Hybrid is different: its 12V battery is a lithium unit managed by the car's battery management system (BMS), and it comes with a 12V battery reset button so you can wake the system up yourself without jumper cables. If you've got a hybrid and it's dead, the reset button is your first move. The owner's manual walks you through it, and Kia specifically reminded owners about this procedure when it launched its service campaign.

The hybrid campaign (SC335, dated February 13, 2025) covers about 17,691 Sportage and Niro Hybrids that hadn't already gotten the earlier SA553 update. If you're on a 2023 or 2024 Sportage Hybrid and your car keeps dying or throwing hybrid warnings, ask the dealer to run your VIN for SC335 or SA553 first.

What a dead Sportage battery looks like

Real owner reports to NHTSA for the 2023 Sportage give a good picture of what to watch for:

  • The car dies after sitting less than an hour and you need the 12V reset button every time (one 2023 owner, October 2025)
  • The alarm goes off by itself in the middle of the night
  • The whole dash lights up with warnings, then everything works after a restart
  • A no-start that a jump pack fixes but jumper cables don't

Some of those point to a weak battery. Others (random warnings, total electrical shutdowns while driving) point toward the charging system or the alternator connection the SC248 recall covers. That's why the order matters: rule out the free stuff, then test the battery.

Prices move around by ZIP code, so treat these as a ballpark. And if your Sportage is still under Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, a defective factory battery should be a warranty claim, not a cash purchase. Kia's warranty page doesn't spell out 12V battery terms, so check the Warranty and Consumer Information Manual in your glovebox or ask the dealer.

Easy things to try before you buy a battery

  • Hybrid owners: press the 12V battery reset button, then start the car within the time window the manual gives you.
  • Look for a light left on, a door or hatch not fully shut, or something plugged in. Small drains add up overnight.
  • Get a free load test. Most auto parts stores will test the battery and charging system in the parking lot. A battery that tests fine but keeps dying points to a drain or charging problem.
  • Check the terminals for looseness or white crusty corrosion. Tight and clean beats new and loose.
  • Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with your dealer for SC248, SC335 and SA553.

DIY or shop?

On the gas Sportage, swapping the 12V battery is a normal driveway job if you're comfortable with a wrench: negative cable off first, positive second, reverse to reinstall. The hybrid is a different story. Its 12V lithium battery works with the hybrid system and its software, so a dealer or hybrid-savvy shop is the safer call, especially when a campaign may cover it.

What to ask the shop before paying

  • "Does my VIN show any open recalls or campaigns, especially SC248, SC335 or SA553?"
  • "Did the battery fail a load test, or are we guessing?"
  • "Did you check for a parasitic drain and test the alternator output?"
  • "Is this covered under my 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty?"

Is it worth fixing?

Always. A Sportage from 2023 or later is a young car, and a battery or software fix is cheap compared to what the SUV is worth. Just don't let anyone sell you a battery before they've checked the free campaigns. For more Sportage help, visit the Kia Sportage repair page.
