Here's a fun Prius fact: the big hybrid battery doesn't start anything until a little 12V battery wakes up the computers first. So the car can show a full-looking hybrid gauge yesterday and act like a brick today. Annoying, yes. Usually cheap, also yes.
The two batteries in your Prius
| Battery | Job | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 12V auxiliary battery | Powers locks, lights, screens and computers, and lets the hybrid system switch on | When it's weak, the car may not go to Ready or may act glitchy |
| Hybrid (HV) battery | Drives the electric motors | Toyota lists 10 years/150,000 miles of hybrid battery warranty on current models |
On the fifth-generation Prius (2023 and newer, LE, XLE and Limited), the hybrid system keeps the 12V battery charged while the car is in Ready. If the car sits for long periods, or something keeps a module awake, the 12V can run down.
What owners report
NHTSA complaints on the new Prius paint a clear picture:
- A 2024 Prius owner said the 12V battery failed at 9 months old on a cold January day with no warning. The dealer confirmed it and replaced it under warranty.
- A 2025 Prius owner described the small battery "in the back of the car" going flat repeatedly. Interior lights flashed and it wouldn't go to Ready, even after a warranty replacement.
- A 2023 Prius owner whose 12V ran low during a camping trip said the car showed Ready but the shifter dropped to Neutral and wouldn't go into Drive, with low-battery warnings flashing.
- Another 2024 owner warned that getting into the rear hatch with a dead battery took a screwdriver to remove a panel and find a small release lever.
Signs your 12V battery is weak
- Won't go to Ready, or takes several tries
- Lights flash or the screen reboots when you press the power button
- Strange warning messages that clear after a drive
- Doors don't unlock with the key fob even with a fresh fob battery
- The car sat for a week or two before the problem started
Easy things to try first
- Find the backup way in. Check the owner's manual section on what to do if the 12-volt battery is discharged. It shows how to unlock the door and where the jump points are, before you're standing in a dark parking lot.
- Jump it by the book. Use the jump-start points and order in your owner's manual. A small lithium jump pack is cheap insurance, but keep it in the cabin, not behind a powered hatch you may not be able to open.
- Leave it in Ready for a while once it starts, or take a real drive, so the hybrid system can recharge the 12V.
- Test the battery. If it fails a load test, replace it. If it passes but keeps dying, look for a drain.
- Unplug the extras. Dash cams, trackers and plug-in chargers that stay powered can flatten a small battery.
What it costs
| Option | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer, 2023 Prius | $260 to $306 (parts $156 to $184, labor $104 to $122) | Kelley Blue Book, Columbus, Ohio ZIP |
| Under warranty | Usually $0 | Owners report warranty replacements on new cars |
| Portable jump pack | Varies | Keep it inside the cabin |
| Hybrid battery | Covered 10 years/150,000 miles on current models | Rarely the cause of a no-start |
What to ask the dealer
- "Did the 12V battery fail a load test, and what's the test printout?"
- "If it's new and still dying, can you check whether the hybrid system is charging it and test for a parasitic drain?"
- "Are there any software updates or bulletins for my VIN related to the 12V battery or no-Ready conditions?"
- "Is the replacement covered under my warranty?"
Is it worth fixing?
Absolutely. It's one of the cheapest repairs a Prius ever needs. The only time to slow down is if a new battery keeps dying. Then don't keep buying batteries. Keep your receipts, report it to NHTSA, and ask the dealer to find the drain or charging fault.
