P0014: "B" Camshaft Position - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1)
The bank 1 exhaust cam is more advanced than the engine computer commanded, or is not reaching its target.
What P0014 means
P0014 is the exhaust cam version of P0011. The engine computer has measured bank 1 "B" cam timing, usually the exhaust cam, as more advanced than requested, or found that the system is not tracking its target. RepairPal lists a failed variable timing solenoid, low oil, oil that does not meet the maker specs, an engine that is not timed correctly, a failed actuator and a worn timing chain as possible causes. Because these phasers depend on clean oil at the right pressure, a quick oil check and change is a smart first step. If the code comes back, a shop commands the exhaust solenoid with a scan tool and watches desired versus actual cam angle. Slow or no response points to the solenoid or phaser. If the cam is out of place even with the system at rest, they check timing marks and chain stretch. P0014 is common on several popular four cylinder engines, and some makers have published service bulletins on solenoid and phaser updates.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle or stalling
- Reduced power and acceleration
- Worse fuel economy
- Rattle or ticking from the front of the engine on some engines
Most common causes
- Low oil level or wrong oil viscosity
- Sticking exhaust cam solenoid
- Faulty exhaust cam phaser
- Stretched timing chain
- Clogged solenoid oil screen
What to check yourself first
Check the oil level and condition, and make sure the right oil grade was used at the last change. Change overdue or dark oil and clear the code to see whether it returns.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Oil and filter change with the correct oil | $160-$188 | RepairPal lists an oil and filter change as a common first repair. Use the exact oil viscosity your engine calls for. |
| Replace variable valve timing (oil control) solenoid | $469-$594 | Replaced when it sticks or is clogged. |
| Replace variable valve timing actuator (cam phaser) | $1,094-$1,425 | When the exhaust phaser does not respond. |
| Replace timing chain | $2,120-$2,764 | If chain stretch is confirmed. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
