P0017: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)
The bank 1 "B" camshaft, usually the exhaust cam, is out of sync with the crankshaft according to the engine computer.
What P0017 means
P0017 is the "B" camshaft partner of P0016. On engines with sensors on both the intake and exhaust cams, the computer checks each cam against the crank. When the bank 1 "B" cam, usually the exhaust, is outside its allowed window relative to the crank, P0017 sets. RepairPal lists the same set of causes as for P0016: a failed timing solenoid, low oil, oil that does not meet requirements, an engine not timed correctly, a failed actuator and a worn chain. When P0016 and P0017 appear together, both cams are off in the same direction, which strongly suggests timing chain stretch rather than a single sensor or solenoid. When only P0017 appears, the exhaust phaser, its solenoid or its sensor are more likely. Shops compare cam and crank waveforms on a scope, check cam angles with a scan tool, and look at timing marks or measure chain stretch. Replacing a stretched chain early is much cheaper than repairing an engine after it fails.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rattle on cold start
- Rough idle or stalling
- Reduced power
- Hard starting
Most common causes
- Stretched timing chain
- Worn chain tensioner or guides
- Exhaust cam phaser stuck
- Sticking exhaust VVT solenoid
- Low or dirty oil
- Faulty exhaust cam position sensor
What to check yourself first
If both P0016 and P0017 are present, a stretched timing chain is a strong suspect. Check the oil level and change dirty oil with the correct grade. Listen for a cold start rattle.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace timing chain | $2,120-$2,764 | The usual repair when P0016 and P0017 appear together. |
| Replace variable valve timing actuator (cam phaser) | $1,094-$1,425 | If the exhaust phaser is stuck. |
| Replace variable valve timing (oil control) solenoid | $469-$594 | When the solenoid is sticking or clogged. |
| Replace camshaft position sensor | $224-$326 | If the exhaust cam sensor signal is faulty. |
| Oil and filter change with the correct oil | $160-$188 | RepairPal lists an oil and filter change as a common first repair. Use the exact oil viscosity your engine calls for. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
