P0521: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Range/Performance
The oil pressure reading does not make sense to the engine computer for the current engine speed and temperature.
What P0521 means
RepairPal explains that the oil pressure sensor reports engine oil pressure to the computer, and when the computer detects an incorrect signal, it sets P0521, sometimes with the oil pressure warning light. The difference from P0520 is that the circuit looks electrically fine, but the value is implausible, such as high pressure with the engine off or pressure that does not rise with RPM. RepairPal lists sensor failure, wiring issues and computer failure as causes, with sensor replacement the most common repair. Still, it is important to rule out a real problem: low oil level, the wrong viscosity, a worn oil pump or a clogged pickup screen can all make pressure act strangely. Because low oil pressure can destroy an engine quickly, shops verify actual pressure with a mechanical gauge before replacing the sensor. On engines with variable valve timing, oil pressure problems often set timing codes as well, which is a clue that the pressure itself may be low.
Common symptoms
- Oil pressure warning light on
- Check engine light on
- Oil pressure gauge reading odd or fluctuating
- Engine ticking or knocking if pressure is truly low
- Sometimes no other symptoms
Most common causes
- Faulty oil pressure sensor
- Low engine oil level
- Wrong oil viscosity
- Worn oil pump or clogged pickup screen
- Wiring or connector problem
- Worn engine bearings
What to check yourself first
Check the oil level and condition. Make sure the oil grade matches your owner manual. If the oil light comes on while driving, pull over safely and shut off the engine.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace oil pressure sensor | $207-$261 | RepairPal lists oil pressure sensor replacement as the common repair. |
| Oil and filter change with the correct oil | $160-$188 | If the oil is low, overdue or the wrong grade. |
| Check engine light diagnosis at a shop | $125-$183 | A mechanical oil pressure test confirms whether the engine is safe. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For wiring faults. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
