P0732: Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio
The transmission is not producing the expected gear ratio in second gear, which usually means slipping.
What P0732 means
With P0732, the transmission computer has found that second gear is not producing the right ratio between the input and output shafts. RepairPal describes this family of codes as an RPM difference greater than specified between input and output speed sensors in the named gear, often a sign of slipping. In second gear you might feel a flare on the 1-2 shift, where engine RPM jumps briefly before the gear grabs, or a slip under load at low speeds. Causes include low or burnt fluid, a worn clutch or band that applies second gear, a sticking shift solenoid, valve body wear and internal seal leaks that bleed off pressure. Some transmissions have known second gear problems that makers addressed with service bulletins or updated parts. Shops read the transmission codes, check fluid, watch live ratio data and line pressure and command shift solenoids with a scan tool. Catching it early can sometimes mean a solenoid or valve body repair instead of a full rebuild.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Slipping or flare when in or shifting into second gear
- Delayed or harsh shifts
- Engine revs rise without the car speeding up
- Transmission in limp mode, stuck in one gear
Most common causes
- Low or burnt transmission fluid
- Worn second gear clutch or band
- Sticking shift solenoid
- Valve body wear
- Faulty speed sensor
- Internal fluid leak at a seal
What to check yourself first
Check transmission fluid level and smell. Note whether the slip happens on the 1-2 shift or while cruising in second. Drive gently until it is checked.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission fluid change | $294-$356 | Low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes. Check the correct fluid type for your transmission. |
| Transmission diagnosis with a full scan | $125-$183 | A transmission scan reads the codes stored in the transmission computer, which a basic reader may miss. |
| Transmission filter and fluid service | $621-$785 | Can help when contamination is causing solenoid sticking. |
| Replace transmission (if internally damaged) | $6,238-$6,764 | If second gear friction parts are worn. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
