Few things kill the mood like a Compass that bangs into gear, hesitates when you hit the gas, or flashes "Service Transmission" and drops into limp mode. The good news: a lot of these cases are software or adaptation issues, not a dead transmission. The key is knowing which transmission you actually have.
Which transmission is in your Compass?
| Model years | Transmission | Paired with |
|---|---|---|
| 2017-2022 FWD | 6-speed automatic | 2.4-liter |
| 2017-2022 4x4 | 9-speed automatic | 2.4-liter |
| 2017-2022 (some) | 6-speed manual | FWD or 4x4 |
| 2023-2025 | 8-speed automatic | 2.0-liter turbo, 4x4 standard |
That split comes from Consumer Guide's 2017 Compass review and Mopar Insiders' coverage of the 2023 update. Knowing yours matters, because the fixes, fluids and costs are different.
What owners report
NHTSA complaints for the second-generation Compass are full of transmission stories. Owners describe:
- Harsh or jerky shifts (a 2018 owner: "jerking aggressively when shifting into gear").
- "Bucking" that came back after a dealer software update (2021).
- Limp mode on long climbs, with "Service Transmission Now" showing up (2021).
- Stalling or not shifting at speed (2021, 2022).
- Whining and jerking on shifts on a newer 2023.
- Hard jolts at freeway speed on a 2025, alongside a "Service 4x4" warning.
On CarComplaints, the 2018 Compass lists "slamming into gear" with 5 reports, plus unresponsive acceleration, clutch burnout (manual) and grinding vibration.
Recalls and bulletins that apply
- 2017 Compass with the 6-speed (NHTSA 17V301000). The left front halfshaft may not be fully seated and can disengage from the transmission or break. Free at the dealer. A clunk followed by loss of drive on a 2017 is a reason to check this first.
- 2018 Compass, 2.4-liter, 9-speed, built January 11-19, 2018. A Mitchell 1 report (via Vehicle Service Pros) describes damaged valve-body oil feed tubes causing the car to stick in 4th gear with codes P0810, P0734 and P072F. The fix is replacing the O-rings, or the whole transmission if a tube is broken.
- Transmission software flashes. Chrysler has issued several 9-speed (948TE) TCM flashes for shift quality, including Compass bulletins, and they typically end with a "Quick Learn" adaptation. If a shop updates software, ask them to run that relearn too.
What it costs
| Fix | Typical cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Code scan | Often free at parts stores; shops charge a diagnostic fee | n/a |
| TCM software update | Often free under warranty; ask the dealer otherwise | Dealer |
| Fluid change, 2018-2021 | $138-$166 | RepairPal |
| Fluid change, 2023-2025 | $160-$188 | RepairPal |
| Fluid change, 2017 | $235-$292 | RepairPal (2013-2017 range) |
| Transmission replacement | About $3,500 | Jerry |
| Covered recall repair | $0 | NHTSA recall at a Jeep dealer |
Jeep's powertrain warranty doesn't last forever, so a 2023-2025 Compass with these symptoms should go back to the dealer now, with notes on when it happens.
Easy things to try first
- Read the codes. A cheap OBD-II scanner shows if the transmission module stored faults. Write them down.
- Check the battery. Low voltage causes weird module behavior on modern Jeeps, including shifting and stop/start errors.
- Note the pattern. Cold or warm? Coasting to a stop? Up a long hill? Techs can fix what they can reproduce.
- Check fluid service history. Ask a shop what your owner's manual says for your exact transmission.
What to ask the shop before paying
- "Which transmission is this, and what codes are stored?"
- "Is there newer TCM software, and will you run the Quick Learn afterward?"
- "Did you check my VIN for open recalls?"
- "Is this a valve body or solenoid repair, or are you replacing the whole unit? Why?"
- "Is the replacement new, remanufactured or used, and what's the warranty?"
Is it worth fixing?
If it's a software flash or a recall, absolutely, and it may cost nothing. A fluid service is cheap insurance. If an older, high-mileage 2017-2019 Compass needs a whole transmission at around $3,500, compare that against the car's value and get a second quote from a transmission specialist before deciding.
