The second-generation Compass (2017 to now) is a small SUV with four-wheel disc brakes and an electronic parking brake. Brake jobs are routine, but there are two Compass-specific things worth knowing before you hand over your card: an old rear caliper recall, and a pile of owner reports about the electronic parking brake turning itself on.

What Compass brakes cost

Model yearsPads, one axle (RepairPal)What to know
2017$348-$405 (RepairPal lists 2014-2017 together)Check the rotors too; a 2017 is old enough to need them
2018-2022$547-$604The priciest range RepairPal lists for this generation
2023-2024$291-$3482.0-liter turbo era
2025$283-$340Still likely under warranty for other faults

Those are certified-shop estimates and they move with your zip code. Rotors cost extra. An independent shop is usually cheaper than a Jeep dealer for the same job. If you're quoted well above these ranges, ask for the parts and labor breakdown.

The 2018-2019 rear caliper recall

NHTSA campaign 18V523000 covers certain 2018-2019 Jeep Compass SUVs (plus some Dodge Grand Caravan, Journey and 2019 Cherokee). The rear brake caliper pistons may have an insufficient coating, which can let gas pockets form and reduce rear braking performance. Recall repairs are free at any Jeep dealer, no matter how old the car is or who owns it now. Put your 17-digit VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls. If it shows open, book it before you pay anyone for rear brakes.

The parking brake that sets itself

Look through NHTSA's complaint database for the Compass and a pattern jumps out. Owners of 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2025 models describe the electronic parking brake engaging on its own while driving or at a stop, often alongside stop/start or engine warnings. One 2021 owner said the dealer traced it to an emissions-related fault that triggered an emergency stop. Others mention a "Service Start/Stop" message first.

That's not something a brake pad job fixes. If it happens to you, get to a safe spot, note every warning message on the dash, and have a Jeep dealer scan all modules. Ask them to check for software updates and stored codes.

Signs it's just time for brakes

  • Squealing under light braking from the pad wear indicators.
  • Grinding when you stop. The pad may be worn to metal.
  • Shaking under braking at highway speed. One 2020 owner reported vibration braking from above about 70 mph, which often points to front rotors.
  • A low, soft pedal or a brake warning light.
  • One wheel hotter or smellier than the others after a drive. Possible sticking caliper.

Easy things to check first

  • Run your VIN for the 18V523000 recall on 2018-2019 models.
  • Peek at the pads through the wheel. Thin pad material or a lip on the rotor edge means it's time.
  • Check the brake fluid level and color under the hood.
  • Note any dash messages. Start/stop, ABS or parking brake warnings change what the shop should look at.

DIY or shop?

Front pads are doable at home with a torque wrench and jack stands. Rear pads are trickier because the electronic parking brake has to be put into service mode with a scan tool before the caliper pistons can be pushed back. Forcing them can damage the motor. If you don't have a capable scan tool, pay a shop for the rears. And never get under a car held up only by a jack.

What to ask the shop before paying

  • "Did you check my VIN for the rear caliper recall?"
  • "Pads only, or pads and rotors? Why the rotors?"
  • "Will you use a scan tool to retract the electronic parking brake?"
  • "Did you see any stored codes for the parking brake or stop/start system?"
  • "What's the warranty on parts and labor?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Even at the high end of RepairPal's range for 2018-2022 models, brakes are a small bill compared to what the Compass is worth, and they're not optional. Just make sure the free recall is done first, and don't let anyone sell you a brake job to fix a parking brake that's misbehaving electronically.
