Here's the thing about "Pathfinder transmission problems": the answer depends completely on the year. A 2014 and a 2023 Pathfinder have nothing in common under the floor. So let's split them up.

Which transmission do you have?

Model yearsTransmissionKnown trouble spots
2013-2016 PathfinderCVT (continuously variable)Judder or shudder at low speed, hesitation, torque converter and valve body replacements
2017-2020 PathfinderCVT (updated)Fewer reports, but the 2017-2018 years are still in the CVT settlement
2022 and newer PathfinderZF 9-speed automaticHarsh or confused shifts, "Service A/T, power reduced" warnings, software updates

The redesigned 2022 Pathfinder kept the 3.5-liter V6 (284 hp) but dropped the CVT for a nine-speed automatic from supplier ZF, a change that was widely covered at launch. It also bumped towing to up to 6,000 pounds with the tow package, which matters here, because towing is hard on any transmission.

The 2013-2020 CVT: judder, shudder and hesitation

On CarComplaints, "transmission jerking" is the top 2013 Pathfinder complaint (44 reports, averaging around 31,950 miles), and "stutters excessively" leads for 2014 (32 reports, averaging around 50,350 miles, typical cost $4,450). TrueDelta owners describe the same thing in plain language: a shudder at 20 to 30 mph, repeated reprogramming, dealers who couldn't reproduce it, and eventually a torque converter or full CVT.

2013-2014 Pathfinder: Nissan's campaign PC500 (December 2016) covers non-hybrid 2013-2014 Pathfinders built June 20, 2012 through September 20, 2014. The dealer reprograms the transmission computer so it can store two new judder codes: P17F0 (belt slip) and PF171 (control valve). Nissan was blunt that the software alone "does not repair any symptoms," but it extended CVT coverage from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles.

2015-2018 Pathfinder: A class action settlement (final hearing March 2022) gave the same 84 months/84,000 miles of CVT coverage, covering the CVT assembly, valve body, torque converter, cooler kit and computer reprogramming. The claim window for reimbursing past repairs has closed.

The 2022+ 9-speed: shift quality and warning lights

The newer Pathfinder's complaints are different. Owners describe harsh 1-2 or 2-3 upshifts, a thump going into Drive or Reverse, and rough downshifts when slowing, often worse when cold. Nissan bulletins point to software:

  • NTB22-030 (April 2022): 2022 Pathfinders built before March 21, 2022 that show "Service A/T, power reduced" with code P0715 get a transmission computer reprogram.
  • NTB22-050: low-speed transmission upshift improvement, also a reprogram.
  • NTB21-069A: covers the electronic shifter assembly.

None of those is a recall. NHTSA lists no transmission recalls for the 2022 or 2023 Pathfinder, just seat, hood latch and camera recalls.

Easy things to try first

  • Scan for codes. CVT judder codes (P17F0, PF171) or 9-speed codes (P0715 and others) tell a dealer exactly which bulletin to follow.
  • Ask what software is installed. On a 2022, the dealer can check whether your transmission computer is on one of the part numbers that bulletins say to update.
  • Check fluid condition. On a CVT, burnt or very dark fluid is a bad sign. RepairPal estimates a Pathfinder transmission fluid change at $171 to $199 for 2013-2020 and $73 to $107 for 2022-2025.
  • Log the symptoms. Speed, temperature, throttle. Many owners lose months to "could not duplicate."

What it can cost

SituationWhat you'll likely pay
2013-2018 CVT inside 84 months/84,000 milesUsually $0 for covered CVT parts (confirm by VIN)
2022+ 9-speed reprogram under warrantyUsually $0
Transmission fluid change, 2013-2020$171 to $199 (RepairPal)
Transmission fluid change, 2022-2025$73 to $107 (RepairPal)
CVT replacement out of warranty, 2014About $4,450 typical (CarComplaints owner reports)
CVT replacement out of warranty, 2013One owner was quoted $4,600 (TrueDelta)

What to ask the dealer

  • "Is my VIN still covered by the CVT extension or campaign PC500?"
  • "Which codes are stored, and which bulletin applies?"
  • "Has the latest transmission software been installed?"
  • "Are you replacing the valve body, the belt and pulleys, the torque converter, or the whole unit, and why?"

Is it worth fixing?

For a 2022 or newer Pathfinder, yes, and it's probably free under warranty. Push for the software updates and keep paperwork. For an out-of-coverage 2013-2016 with a judder, a $4,000-plus CVT is a big ask on an older SUV, so price a quality remanufactured unit from an independent shop and compare it to the truck's value before deciding.
