Brakes are supposed to wear. But when a three-row family SUV needs rear pads before its first set of tires, owners start asking questions. If your Pathfinder's service advisor just told you the rears are "at 2 or 3 millimeters" at 18,000 miles, here's the full picture.
What owners are reporting
NHTSA complaints for the redesigned Pathfinder are packed with the same story. In the 2023 Pathfinder complaints we reviewed, about 17 of 21 brake complaints were about early rear wear. A few real examples:
| Model year | Mileage | What the owner reported |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 12,500 miles | Rear brakes and rotors needed replacement |
| 2022 | About 11,000 miles | Rear pads dropped from 8 mm to 3 mm in 3,400 miles while fronts went 7 mm to 6 mm |
| 2023 | 18,000 miles | Told to replace rear brakes and rotors |
| 2022 | About 15,000 miles | Rear brakes and rotors at 90% wear |
| 2023 | 29,000 miles | "Premature wear" of rear pads |
These are owner reports, not confirmed defect findings. But the pattern is hard to miss.
The lawsuit
In October 2025, an Illinois owner filed *Noah Iwan v. Nissan North America* in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. It covers people who bought or leased a 2022 or 2023 Pathfinder. The plaintiff says his dealer found his rear pads worn at about 23,000 miles and Nissan refused warranty coverage, so he paid $468. The suit claims rear pads fail before the 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty runs out and that Nissan calls it "ordinary wear and tear."
Why would the rears wear fast? One owner quoted in coverage of the case says a dealer blamed the "small size of the pad and electronic parking brake." Industry commentary has also floated brake-force distribution or pad compound. None of that is proven, and Nissan hasn't issued a recall.
Signs your rear brakes are going
- A high-pitched squeal from the back when braking (many pads have a metal wear tab that does this on purpose)
- Grinding, which usually means the pad is gone and metal is hitting the rotor
- Lots of dark brake dust on the rear wheels
- A pulsing pedal, which can mean warped or worn rotors
- A service report showing rear pads at 3 mm or less
What it costs
| Job | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Brake pad replacement, 2022-2025 Pathfinder | $327 to $384 (RepairPal) |
| Brake pad replacement, 2013-2015 Pathfinder | $403 to $460 (RepairPal) |
| Rear pads and labor, 2023 Pathfinder (lawsuit plaintiff) | $468 paid at a dealer |
| Brake caliper replacement, Pathfinder | $1,323 to $1,391 (RepairPal) |
| Parking brake activation switch | $193 to $227 (RepairPal) |
If the rotors are too thin to resurface, expect the bill to climb past the pads-only number. Ask the shop to measure rotor thickness and show you the spec.
How to stretch the next set
- Ask for quality pads. Ask the shop what brand and compound they're using, and whether it matches the original spec.
- Have the slide pins cleaned and greased. Sticky caliper slides make pads drag and wear fast.
- Check the rears at every tire rotation. Catching them at 4 mm beats finding them at metal.
- Watch the hill-hold and auto-hold habits. Some owners suspect constant light rear braking adds up. It's not proven, but it costs nothing to notice how often your rears are working.
What to ask before you pay
- "What thickness are the front and rear pads right now?"
- "Are the rotors within spec, or do they really need replacing?"
- "Will Nissan consider goodwill coverage, given the complaints on 2022-2023 models?"
- "Did you clean and lube the caliper slides?"
- "Is there any bulletin for my VIN on rear brake wear?"
Is it worth fixing?
Not a question here. Brakes aren't optional. The real decision is where you get it done and whether you push Nissan on it. Keep every receipt and service record showing pad thickness and mileage, and file your own NHTSA complaint if your rears went early. If the lawsuit goes anywhere, paperwork is what gets people reimbursed.
