P0741: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance/Stuck Off
The torque converter clutch is commanded to lock, but the computer still sees slipping between the engine and transmission.
What P0741 means
P0741 is a performance code, not a wiring code. RepairPal explains that it sets when the computer sees more than about a 200 RPM difference between the torque converter and the transmission input shaft while the lockup clutch should be engaged, since a locked converter should turn at a 1 to 1 ratio. In other words, the clutch is commanded on but is slipping or not applying. Worn converter clutch material, a sticking solenoid or valve, low or old fluid and internal pressure leaks are the common causes. A shudder at light throttle in the 35 to 50 mph range is a classic symptom, along with higher RPM at cruise and worse mileage. Because a slipping converter makes heat, ignoring it can overheat the fluid and damage the rest of the transmission. KBB warns against long, high speed drives. Shops check fluid condition, watch converter slip on a scan tool, test the solenoid and look for bulletins. Sometimes a fluid change helps; worn converters need replacement.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Higher than normal RPM at cruise
- Lower fuel economy
- Shudder at 35 to 50 mph on some vehicles
- Transmission overheating
Most common causes
- Worn or failed torque converter clutch
- Sticking TCC solenoid or valve
- Low or degraded transmission fluid
- Valve body wear
- Internal fluid leak reducing apply pressure
What to check yourself first
Check fluid condition and level. Note any shudder like driving over rumble strips at light throttle around 35 to 50 mph. Some makers recommend a specific fluid flush for converter shudder, so check for service bulletins.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission fluid change | $294-$356 | Low or burnt fluid causes many transmission codes. Check the correct fluid type for your transmission. |
| Transmission filter and fluid service | $621-$785 | Fresh fluid and filter can stop shudder from degraded friction modifiers. |
| Transmission diagnosis with a full scan | $125-$183 | A transmission scan reads the codes stored in the transmission computer, which a basic reader may miss. |
| Replace transmission (if internally damaged) | $6,238-$6,764 | If the converter or internal parts are damaged, which may mean converter replacement or a rebuild. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
