P2101: Throttle Actuator "A" Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance
The motor that opens and closes the electronic throttle is not moving it the way the engine computer commands.
What P2101 means
In an electronic throttle system, the engine computer reads the pedal sensors, then commands a small electric motor in the throttle body to open the throttle plate to match. Throttle position sensors report back where the plate actually ended up. RepairPal explains that if the computer detects that the throttle is not opening correctly in proportion to the pedal signal, it sets P2101 and may put the engine into limp home mode, limiting power. Carbon buildup that makes the plate stick, a worn throttle motor, and connector or wiring faults are the most common causes. Low supply voltage can also weaken the motor. KBB notes that if the throttle cannot move, the car may not accelerate at all. Shops watch commanded versus actual throttle position on a scan tool, check the motor circuit and power supply, and inspect the throttle body. Cleaning sometimes helps, but replacing the throttle body followed by a throttle relearn is the most common fix.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light, often with a wrench or reduced power light
- Car stuck in reduced power (limp) mode
- Poor or no response to the gas pedal
- Rough or high idle
- Stalling in some cases
Most common causes
- Carbon buildup making the throttle plate stick
- Failing throttle motor inside the electronic throttle body
- Corroded or loose throttle body connector
- Damaged wiring to the throttle motor
- Low system voltage
- Engine computer driver fault (rare)
What to check yourself first
With the engine off and key off, look into the throttle body for heavy carbon around the plate. Clean it carefully with throttle body cleaner if your owner manual allows it, without forcing the plate. Check the connector and battery condition.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace throttle body | $623-$766 | Most P2101 repairs end in a new electronic throttle body. |
| Diagnosis, throttle body cleaning and relearn | $125-$183 | Throttle body cleaning and a relearn fix some cases. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For connector or wiring faults. |
| Replace battery | $456-$493 | If a weak battery is causing low voltage to the throttle motor. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
