P2119: Throttle Actuator "A" Control Throttle Body Range/Performance
The electronic throttle body is not reaching the position the computer commands, or does not return to its rest position correctly.
What P2119 means
P2119 is closely related to P2101. RepairPal explains that it sets when the computer detects the electronic throttle control is not operating as requested, and that the engine may go into limp home mode with limited power. The computer checks more than just whether the throttle opens. With the key on, most systems also check that the throttle returns to a default rest position, held by springs inside the throttle body, when the motor is not powered. If the plate sticks from carbon or ice, the return spring weakens, the gears wear or the motor struggles, the computer sees the throttle in the wrong place and sets P2119. KBB warns that symptoms can appear randomly on the road, so experts do not suggest driving with it. Shops watch commanded and actual throttle position, check for binding, test the motor circuit and position sensors, and clean or replace the throttle body. A throttle relearn is usually needed afterward so idle and response return to normal.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light, often with a wrench or reduced power light
- Car stuck in reduced power (limp) mode
- Poor or no response to the gas pedal
- Rough or high idle
- Stalling in some cases
Most common causes
- Throttle plate sticking from carbon or ice
- Worn throttle body return spring or gears
- Failing throttle motor
- Throttle position sensor problem in the throttle body
- Connector or wiring fault
- Engine computer fault (rare)
What to check yourself first
Check for carbon buildup around the throttle plate and clean it if your owner manual allows. In freezing weather, note whether the problem happens only on cold mornings, which can point to ice. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace throttle body | $623-$766 | The common fix when the throttle body does not track its command. |
| Diagnosis, throttle body cleaning and relearn | $125-$183 | Cleaning and a throttle relearn solve some cases. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For connector or wiring problems. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
