When the 14th-generation F-150 launched for 2021, Ford dealers started seeing trucks come back with dead batteries almost right away. Ford even told reporters that early-built trucks needed a software update so batteries wouldn't lose charge. Five years later, many of those fixes are well documented, which is good news for you.

The bulletins that cover battery drain

TSB 21-2097 (March 2021)2021 F-150Discharged battery or no crank from zone lighting left enabled in SYNC 4 or FordPass, or a rear door that doesn't fully latchReprogram the gateway module (trucks built on or before March 16, 2021 with zone lighting) and/or align the rear doors
TSB 23-2130 (May 2023), later superseded by an updated bulletin2021-2023 F-150No crank/no start with excessive battery draw and the A/C clutch engaged at all timesReplace body control module C (BCMC) and the A/C clutch disc and hub

The A/C clutch one is sneaky. An open diode in the A/C clutch can damage a driver circuit in body control module C, which leaves the clutch powered all the time. That keeps pulling current after you shut the truck off. Ford's labor times for that job run 2.2 to 4.0 hours depending on engine, so you really want it done under warranty if it applies.

The battery monitor sensor (BMS)

The F-150 uses a battery monitor sensor on the negative battery cable to estimate state of charge. If it misreads, the truck can shut off features, stall start-stop, or complain about the battery even when the battery is fine. Ford ran Customer Satisfaction Program 23B70 to replace certain BMS units on 2022-2023 F-150 Lightning electric trucks because the sensor could under-report 12V capacity during over-the-air updates. That program was for the Lightning only and ran through January 5, 2025.

On gas and hybrid trucks, owners on the F150gen14 forum report that after installing a new battery, the BMS should be reset so it relearns. The procedure they describe: key in accessory mode, flash the high beams five times, then press the brake pedal three times until the battery icon flashes, and let the truck sit 6-8 hours to learn. That's owner-sourced, so if your truck still acts up, let a dealer reset it with a scan tool.

What a new battery costs

Model yearsRepairPal estimate
2022-2026 F-150$494-$522
2015-2017 F-150$491-$519
2008-2014 F-150$247-$264

Prices vary by engine and battery type, so get a quote for your exact truck. RepairPal says the average battery lasts about four years and recommends a charging-system check after installing a new one.

How to tell what's actually wrong

  • Dies overnight, battery tests good: that's a drain. Ask about TSB 21-2097, TSB 23-2130 and current software.
  • Dies after sitting several days, battery tests weak: could just be an old battery, or short trips not recharging it.
  • Stalls or shuts off features with a low battery message: ask about the PU1009 software update.
  • Warning that the battery is low right after a new battery: the BMS may need a reset.

DIY or shop?

A battery swap is a normal DIY job: negative off first, and wear eye protection. On PowerBoost hybrids with two 12V batteries, disconnect both before working on the sensor. For any drain or module problem, go to a dealer. These fixes need Ford's diagnostic software, and many are warranty items.

What to ask before paying

  • "Do TSB 21-2097 or 23-2130 apply to my VIN?"
  • "Is my truck up to date on software, including SU6 and PU1009?"
  • "Did you do a parasitic draw test and check the A/C clutch?"
  • "Will you reset the battery monitor sensor after the new battery?"

Is it worth fixing?

Definitely. An F-150 from 2021 or newer is worth far more than a battery or a module, and drains that Ford has already documented are usually fixable for good. More F-150 help is on the Ford F-150 repair page.
