The third-generation Acadia (2024 and newer) is bigger, more powerful and more upscale than the old one. It also brought a new brake setup, and owners have been vocal about it. Some complaints are annoying. Some are scary. Knowing which is which can save you a bad drive and a pointless bill.

Problem 1: "Service Brake Assist" and loss of power assist

This is the serious one. Dozens of 2025 Acadia owners have told NHTSA about warnings like "Service Brake Assist," "Service ESC," "Brake Assist Failure. Press Hard to Brake. Speed Limited" and ABS and traction lights all at once. Several describe a hard pedal and much longer stops. Many say the dealer diagnosed a bad master cylinder or electronic brake control module, and that parts were backordered for weeks.

In August 2026, NHTSA escalated its investigation of GM's eBoost brake system to an engineering analysis covering about 1.16 million vehicles, including the GMC Acadia, Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave, with model years 2023-2026 depending on the vehicle. According to CBT News, NHTSA counted 745 unique failure reports, 22 crashes or fires and 6 injuries, with no deaths. GM says its own review found no unreasonable safety risk. As of October 2026, there's no recall.

Problem 2: Pad life drops way too fast

Lots of 2024-2025 owners have seen the dash say their pads are nearly done at low miles, while the dealer measures plenty of pad left. That's a software issue. GM bulletin 25-NA-029 (February 2025) says the electronic brake control module over-predicts pad wear on the 2024-2025 Acadia and Traverse and the 2025 Enclave. A separate service update, N242471431, reprograms the brake module for affected 2024-2025 Acadias, at no charge under the new-vehicle warranty.

Problem 3: Squealing and early wear

The most common 2024 complaint is plain noise. Owners report loud squealing at low speed from early mileage. Some say dealers resurfaced rotors, cleaned pads or used anti-squeal products, and the noise came back. One owner reported front pads at 5 mm at about 16,000 miles, and another reported paying $380 for front pads and rotors that didn't stop the squeal. Others were told the noise was normal for the pad material.

The 2024 Acadia uses four-wheel disc brakes with 321 mm front and 315 mm rear rotors on every trim, per GM Authority's spec sheet. It's a heavy three-row SUV that can tow 5,000 pounds, so pads and rotors do real work.

How to tell what you've got

  • Noise only, no lights. Probably pads or hardware. Annoying, but not an emergency.
  • Low pad-life message, but pads look thick. Likely the calibration issue. Ask about 25-NA-029 and N242471431.
  • Brake, ABS, ESC and "Brake Assist" warnings together, pedal hard or stops long. Possible master cylinder or brake module failure. Stop driving it.
  • Grinding, pulling or shaking. Have pads, rotors and calipers inspected now. One owner reported a locked front caliper with overheated pads and a warped rotor.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Has my VIN had N242471431 done, and was pad life reset after new pads?"
  • "What brake codes are stored? Is it the master cylinder or the EBCM?"
  • "If parts are backordered, will you provide a loaner?"
  • "Is this covered under my bumper-to-bumper warranty?"
  • "Can you put in writing whether it's safe to drive?"

Is it worth fixing?

On a 2024-2025 Acadia, most brake problems should be free at the dealer for now, so document everything and push for a real repair. Keep copies of every repair order. If a brake-assist failure repeats, your state's lemon law may apply, and the NHTSA probe could turn into a recall. Report your own problem at NHTSA.gov too. It helps.
