The new Acadia is a much bigger SUV than the one it replaced, with a 328-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo four. It's a strong combo when it works. But the transmission has drawn complaints, and Consumer Reports owner surveys list the transmission among the Acadia's trouble spots. Here's how to sort out what you're feeling.

The symptoms owners report

As of October 2026, NHTSA lists 7 powertrain complaints for the 2024 Acadia and 4 for the 2025. They're a small share of total complaints, but they're specific:

  • Hesitation from a stop, especially on an incline. Engine revs, SUV barely moves.
  • Delayed engagement, where you shift into drive and nothing happens for a beat.
  • Hard shifts and slipping. One 2025 owner reported the transmission failed at 4,150 miles after hard shifts and slipping.
  • Fluid leaks. Two 2024 owners reported transmission fluid puddles under the vehicle.
  • Total failure at low miles. Torque News covered a 2024 owner whose Acadia shuddered and slipped at about 950 miles, then wouldn't go into drive or reverse. The dealer replaced the transmission, and the owner says GM bought the vehicle back.

Bulletin 26-NA-192: stuck in first gear

GM Authority reported in August 2026 that GM bulletin 26-NA-192 covers certain 2024-2026 Acadia, 2024-2026 Traverse and 2025-2026 Enclave models. The issue can come and go. The SUV stays in first gear until you stop and put it in Park, which clears it for a while.

GM's explanation is that the output speed sensor can briefly send a wrong signal, which messes up the shift pattern. The fix is replacing that sensor. It sounds small, but the sensor sits behind the control valve body, so the tech has to remove the valve body cover, wiring harness, park inhibitor solenoid and a fluid transfer pipe to reach it. The bulletin also warns that the valve body's check balls must go back in exactly the right spots, or you'll get new shift problems.

What GM says is normal

Not every quirk is a defect. GM bulletin 23-NA-153 (September 2023) describes normal shift behavior and a brief delay in throttle response when you open the throttle quickly. Bulletin 24-NA-061 (March 2024) asks techs to test-drive and confirm if a reported transmission condition is actually normal. If the dealer tells you something is "operating as designed," these are probably the documents they're looking at.

The 2024 inventory fix

In June 2024, GM issued service update N242446290 for certain 2024 Acadia and Terrain units (plus several other GM models) because clutch retaining rings inside the transmission could be out of spec. The fix was replacing the clutch piston housing, but it applied only to vehicles still in dealer inventory, and it ran through July 31, 2025. If you bought a 2024 Acadia, ask the dealer to check your VIN's history for it.

Easy things to check first

  • Look for leaks. Red or brownish fluid under the middle of the SUV is a sign to book a visit now.
  • Scan for codes. A cheap OBD-II reader shows whether the transmission has stored faults.
  • Check for software updates and open campaigns by VIN. It's free.
  • Don't tow heavy until it's fixed. The 2024 Acadia is rated for 5,000 pounds, and a slipping transmission plus a trailer is a bad mix.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Does bulletin 26-NA-192 apply to my VIN, and was the output speed sensor checked?"
  • "What codes are stored?"
  • "Was N242446290 completed on my vehicle?"
  • "If you can't reproduce it, can a tech ride along with me?"
  • "Will you put 'customer states' on the repair order so the complaint is on record?"

Is it worth fixing?

Absolutely, and almost certainly for free right now. Every 2024-2026 Acadia is still inside its 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage unless it's racked up big miles. Document every visit. If the same transmission problem keeps coming back, talk to a lemon law attorney in your state before the warranty clock runs out.
