Picture this. You're merging onto the highway, the Pilot stumbles, and the check engine light starts blinking. At idle it shakes like a washing machine with a shoe in it. You plug in a cheap code reader and get P0302 or P0303. On a lot of Pilots, that code is the start of a well-known story.
Why Pilots foul their spark plugs
Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) shuts off some cylinders while you cruise to save fuel. The problem is what happens in those resting cylinders. Oil can get pulled past the piston rings and collect there. When the cylinder wakes back up, that oil coats the spark plug, the plug fouls, and the engine misfires.
Honda's own service bulletins describe it the same way. The 2013 bulletin for the 2009-2013 Pilot says the piston rings on certain cylinders "may rotate and align," which can lead to spark plug fouling. A 2025 Honda memo for 2013-2015 Pilots blames worn or sludged rings that let oil reach the plugs.
What Honda has covered, by year
| Pilot years | What Honda did | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 2009-2013 | Class action settlement (Soto v. American Honda). Misfire repair for P0301-P0304 covered 8 years, unlimited miles | Expired for nearly everyone, since the newest of these were sold around 2013 |
| 2013-2015 | June 2025 warranty extension for this misfire repair: 10 years from original purchase or 150,000 miles | Still active if your Pilot is inside 10 years and 150,000 miles |
| 2016 and newer | Not part of these misfire extensions | Normal diagnosis and repair |
The 2025 memo also said Pilots identified through January 31, 2026 were covered regardless of age or mileage. That window has closed. So right now the 10-year and 150,000-mile limits are what count. A 2015 Pilot first sold in 2016 could still be inside the window. One sold new in early 2015 is probably out.
What the real fix looks like
Swapping spark plugs alone often buys you a few months. Honda's companion bulletin for the Odyssey (same engine family, same problem) spells out the full repair: clean the pistons, replace the piston rings, replace spark plugs, and update the engine computer software. If the cylinder walls are scored, the fix becomes a new short block. On the Odyssey, Honda's flat-rate time for the ring job runs about 8 to 9 hours, which is why you want this done under coverage if at all possible.
How to tell if it's this problem or something simpler
- Code points to one cylinder and the plug is oily or black and crusty. Classic VCM fouling.
- Code moves around between cylinders, and you're adding oil between changes. Rings are a strong suspect.
- Plug looks normal but the misfire follows the coil when you swap it to another cylinder. That's a bad ignition coil. Cheap fix.
- Misfire only when cold, no oil use. Could still be a plug or coil. Don't jump straight to the ring job.
Easy things to try first
- Check the oil level today. These engines can use oil, and running low makes everything worse.
- Pull the plug on the misfiring cylinder (or have a shop do it). An oily plug tells you a lot.
- Swap the coil with a neighboring cylinder and clear the code. If the misfire moves, buy a coil, not rings.
- Keep receipts for every misfire-related visit. They matter if you ask Honda for help later.
What it costs
| Repair | Estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ignition coil, 2016-2022 Pilot | $122-$139 (RepairPal) | Per coil |
| Ignition coil, 2023-2025 Pilot | $247-$281 (RepairPal) | Newer generation costs more |
| Ignition coil, 2013-2015 Pilot | $130-$163 (RepairPal) | Check the VIN for coverage first |
| Spark plug replacement | $360-$489 (RepairPal, all years) | A V6 has six plugs, and some are harder to reach |
| Spark plugs, 2016 Pilot | $507-$581 (RepairPal) | |
| Spark plugs, 2023-2025 Pilot | $502-$593 (RepairPal) | |
| Piston ring repair under Honda's extension | $0 if eligible | Dealer must confirm fouled plugs and the codes |
What to ask before you pay
- "Does my VIN qualify for the 2013-2015 Pilot misfire warranty extension?"
- "Is the plug on the misfiring cylinder oil-fouled? Can I see it?"
- "Did you swap coils to rule out a bad coil?"
- "Is a software update part of this repair?"
- "If I already paid for this repair, can I submit for reimbursement?" It never hurts to ask.
Is it worth fixing?
If your 2013-2015 Pilot qualifies, absolutely. That's a big engine job done for free. If you're outside the window, the answer depends on the plug. A bad coil or worn plugs on a healthy engine is a cheap, easy yes. Confirmed ring wear with heavy oil use on a high-mile Pilot is a real repair bill, so get a written quote and weigh it against what the Pilot is worth. Many owners still find it cheaper than a replacement SUV.
