Say you're third in line at a red light. The Pilot does its normal thing and shuts the engine off to save gas. The light turns green, you lift off the brake, and nothing. Dash lights on, engine off, horns behind you. That is a scary few seconds, and it's exactly what a lot of Pilot owners have reported to federal safety regulators.

What's going on

Auto Idle Stop shuts the engine off when you stop and restarts it when you release the brake. That means the starter works a lot harder than it did on older cars. On some Pilots, the restart just doesn't happen. Honda's customer notice says simply that after the idle stop feature engages, "the vehicle may not automatically restart."

NHTSA opened a preliminary evaluation on this in June 2022 for 2016-2019 Pilots. It later upgraded it to an engineering analysis (EA25004) and widened it to other Hondas and Acuras with the same 3.5-liter V6 and 9-speed setup. NHTSA says complaints kept coming in, including from owners whose Pilots already had the fix done. As of this writing it's still open, and there's no recall for it.

Honda's two-stage fix

  • Stage 1: software update. A dealer updates the engine computer's idle stop software. Honda says it takes about 15 minutes and it's free.
  • Stage 2: hardware. If the no-restart happens again after the update, Honda may replace the starter assembly and starter relays and adjust the valves. That takes about 3 hours, also free.
  • Extended coverage. The valve adjustment, or the valve adjustment plus starter replacement, for this condition is covered for 10 years from the original purchase date with no mileage limit.

California owners, take note. Honda's notice says the California DMV won't renew your registration until the update is done.

How to tell it's this problem

  • It only fails right after an auto stop, and the engine starts fine with the button. That's the classic pattern.
  • Slow cranking on a cold morning too? Could be a weak battery instead, or as well. Get the battery tested. It's usually free at parts stores.
  • Clicking with no crank on every start, auto stop or not? Points to a starter, relay or battery connection, not just the idle stop logic.
  • Engine starts then dies? Different problem. Don't let a shop sell you a starter for that.

What to do if it happens in traffic

  • Put on your hazards right away.
  • Shift to Park, keep your foot on the brake, and press the engine start button to restart it the normal way.
  • Once you're moving again, turn Auto Idle Stop off with its button. It typically switches itself back on at the next startup, so plan on pressing it each drive until the fix is done.

What it costs if you pay

Honda dealer, inside the 10-year window$0Software first, hardware if it repeats
Starter replacement, 2016-2020 Pilot$505-$812 (RepairPal)Independent or dealer, out of pocket
Starter replacement, 2021-2022 Pilot$1,674-$1,743 (RepairPal)RepairPal shows a much higher range for these years
Starter replacement, 2023-2025 Pilot$756-$824 (RepairPal)Newer generation, not in Honda's notice

What to ask the dealer

  • "Has the idle stop software update been done on my VIN?"
  • "If it fails again, will you do the Stage 2 starter, relay and valve adjustment under the extended coverage?"
  • "Can you note on the repair order that I reported a no-restart after idle stop?" That paper trail helps if it comes back.
  • At an independent shop: "Is this the idle stop issue Honda already covers?" A good shop will send you to the dealer.

Is it worth fixing?

If your Pilot is 2016-2022 and inside 10 years from its first sale, it's free, so yes, today. Even outside the window, a starter is a normal repair on an SUV that's otherwise worth keeping. Just make sure the battery and connections were tested first so you're not paying for the wrong part.
