Click, click, nothing. Or that sad, slow crank on a cold morning. On an Elantra, it's usually just a tired battery, and that's the cheap outcome. The expensive mistake is buying a new battery when the real problem is the alternator (or something draining it overnight). Here's how to sort it out.
What it costs
| Job | DIY | Shop (RepairPal estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Battery, 2022-2025 Elantra | Battery plus a wrench | $424-$464 |
| Battery, 2014-2016 Elantra | Battery plus a wrench | $199-$217 |
| Battery, 2005-2010 Elantra | Battery plus a wrench | $107-$125 |
| Alternator, 2022-2025 Elantra | Not a beginner job | $396-$660 |
| Alternator, 2016 Elantra | Not a beginner job | $762-$1,001 |
| Alternator, 2011-2013 Elantra | Not a beginner job | $544-$972 |

Battery or alternator? How to tell
- Car won't start in the morning, but runs fine after a jump all day: Usually the battery. It isn't holding a charge overnight.
- Car dies while you're driving, or the battery light comes on: Points to the alternator. It's not recharging, so the car runs on the battery until the battery's empty.
- Dim or flickering headlights at idle that brighten when you rev: Classic weak alternator.
- New battery, dead again in a few days: Either the alternator or a parasitic drain (something staying on after you lock the car).
- Clicking with full lights and radio: Could be loose or corroded terminals, or the starter.
Easy things to try first
- Clean and tighten the terminals. White or green crud on the posts can stop a good battery from starting the car.
- Get a free test. Most parts stores will test the battery and charging system in the parking lot for free. A proper test checks the alternator output too, not just the battery.
- Check the date sticker. Batteries usually have a date code on top or the side.
- Hunt for drains. Glovebox light, trunk light, a phone charger or dash cam left plugged in, a door that isn't fully closed.
- Check for recalls with your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before paying for electrical work.
Hyundai also has a dealer bulletin (TSB 23-EE-010H, September 2023) on 2022 Elantras for an extended battery diagnosis using Hyundai's GDS scan tool, aimed at internal shorts and battery deterioration. If you're getting repeat dead batteries on a newer Elantra, ask the dealer to run that test.
Changing it yourself
On most Elantras the battery sits right up front under the hood, so this is a 20-minute job with a 10mm wrench. RepairPal's order is the one to remember: negative cable off first, positive on first. Some cars may lose radio presets or need the windows' auto up and down reset afterward.
What Hyundai's warranty covers
A dealer summary of Hyundai's warranty lists battery coverage for 2016 gas models at 3 years/36,000 miles with no proration, and hybrid batteries at 10 years/100,000 miles. Coverage differs by year, so check your warranty booklet before you buy a battery out of pocket on a newer car.
What to ask the shop before paying
- "Did you test the alternator output, not just the battery?"
- "Is the battery the right type and size for my Elantra?"
- "What's the warranty on the new battery?"
- "If it dies again, will you check for a parasitic drain?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes, every time. A battery is maintenance, not a repair decision. Just make sure the charging system gets tested so you're not back in a month. If the car runs rough once it's started, see our Elantra misfire guide or the Hyundai Elantra repair page.
