The fifth-generation Santa Fe (2024 and newer) is the boxy one with the big tailgate. It's packed with screens, cameras and remote-start features, and all of that leans on the 12-volt battery. When the battery gets weak, things go sideways fast: the key fob stops working, the doors won't unlock, or you get a parade of random warning lights. Here's how to sort a tired battery from a real electrical fault, and what you'll pay either way.

First, is it really the battery?

A weak 12V battery usually shows up in a few classic ways:

  • Slow or no crank on the gas 2.5L and 2.5T models, or the hybrid refusing to go to Ready.
  • Key fob doesn't unlock the doors, so you're stuck using the mechanical key inside the fob.
  • Dim screens or a slow-to-wake display after the car sits.
  • A bunch of warning lights at once after a start. Low voltage confuses the computers.
  • Dead after sitting a few days, especially after short trips.

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Santa Fe include an owner whose year-old SUV with about 18,500 miles had a dead battery and needed a charger to start, and another who found the car fully dead in a parking lot. A 2024 owner reported that roadside assistance found a loose wire connection at the battery rather than a bad battery. Those three stories are a good summary of the usual suspects: old or drained battery, or a bad connection.

Recalls to check before you buy a battery

Some 2024-2025 Santa Fe recalls involve wiring, and a couple can cause electrical weirdness that looks like a battery problem. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. All of these are free at a Hyundai dealer.

Hyundai parts catalogs list one battery assembly (part 37110-3Q700) for the 2025 Santa Fe 2.5L and 2.5T trims. Buy the exact size and terminal layout the car came with. KBB points out that batteries aren't interchangeable and suggests a fresh one, ideally made within the last six months (check the date code).

Easy things to try first

  • Jump it or use a portable jump pack. If it starts and then dies again in a day or two, the battery or charging system needs testing.
  • Check the terminals. Look for corrosion or a loose clamp. A loose cable can kill everything, as one 2024 owner found out.
  • Ask for a load test. KBB suggests testing batteries about every two years. Many parts stores test for free.
  • Think about your driving. Lots of short trips and remote starts don't give the battery time to recharge.
  • Look for something left on. Dash cams, interior lights and phone chargers can drain a battery overnight.

What to ask the shop before paying

  • "Is my car still under the 3-year/36,000-mile coverage for the battery?"
  • "Did you load test the battery and check charging voltage, or just swap it?"
  • "Are any open recalls on my VIN related to wiring or the starter?"
  • "Is this an OEM battery, and what's the warranty on it?"
  • "If it dies again, will you test for a parasitic drain?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes, it's a battery, not a transmission. On a 2024 or 2025 Santa Fe, start at the Hyundai dealer since the original battery is likely still covered, and they can check open recalls at the same visit. If you're out of coverage, a few hundred dollars gets you a new battery. If it keeps dying after a replacement, push for a drain or charging test instead of buying battery number three.
