Brakes on a Cherokee usually just wear out like any other SUV's. But if you're here because your Jeep suddenly locked the rear wheels at a stoplight or flashed "Service Brake," you're in good company. That one is a known pattern, and it's rarely the pads.
The 2026 Cherokee recall (check this first)
The Cherokee name returned for 2026 as a hybrid-only, 4x4-only SUV with a 1.6-liter turbo hybrid making 210 hp, per Mopar Insiders. Production started at Toluca in late 2025.
NHTSA recall 26V223000 (Chrysler recall 29D) covers 241 early 2026 Cherokees built December 4-27, 2025. The ZF-supplied Brake System Control Module may not work properly, which can disable anti-lock braking and electronic stability control, with no warning light. The fix is a free software recalibration at the dealer. FCA said it knew of no accidents or injuries as of March 2026. FCA customer service: 1-800-853-1403.
Two more 2026 recalls touch braking: 26V059000 (trailer tow module, trailer lights and trailer brakes may fail) and 26V559000 (TPMS may not warn of low tire pressure). Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
The parking brake that locks on (2014-2023)
NHTSA's complaint data for the previous-generation Cherokee (2014-2023) is full of the same story: the electronic parking brake turns itself on while driving or at a light, and sometimes won't release. A few common threads from owners:
- Water intrusion. Several 2014-2017 owners report leaks into the rear cargo area or from the sunroof that shorted the parking brake module, with "Service Parking Brake" lit up.
- Power transfer unit (PTU) failures. Owners of 2016, 2019 and 2020 Cherokees describe a PTU failure causing loss of drive and the parking brake engaging. There are PTU recalls: 25V011000 (some 2017-2019) and 26V290000 (some 2019-2023).
- Random engagement with warnings like "Service 4WD," stalling or hazard lights, on 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023 models.
If this happens to you, the fix is a diagnosis, not new pads. Ask the shop to scan all modules, check the parking brake module and its connector for corrosion, check for leaks in the cargo area and sunroof drains, and confirm the PTU recalls are done.
What normal Cherokee brake work costs
| Job | Estimated cost | Source |

| Pads, 2014 and 2020-2021 (RepairPal listing) | $898-$955 | RepairPal; much higher than neighboring years, so verify with a local quote |
| 2026 ABS recall recalibration | $0 | Dealer |
| PTU recall repair (if VIN is included) | $0 | Dealer |

Also on 2019 models: rear caliper recall
NHTSA recall 18V523000 includes some 2019 Cherokees: the rear caliper pistons may have an insufficient coating, which can reduce rear braking. Free at the dealer.
Easy things to check first
- Run your VIN for 26V223000, 18V523000 and the PTU recalls.
- Look for water under the rear cargo floor and around the spare tire area, and check sunroof drains if you have one.
- Check pads and rotors through the wheel. Thin pads or a rotor lip mean normal wear.
- Write down every dash message when the brake acts up. It narrows the diagnosis.
DIY or shop?
Front pads are a fine DIY job with a torque wrench and jack stands. Rear pads require putting the electronic parking brake into service mode with a scan tool before pushing the pistons back. Parking brake faults, module corrosion, PTU issues and anything on a 2026 hybrid are shop or dealer jobs.
What to ask the shop before paying
- "Are there open recalls on my VIN, including the PTU and caliper ones?"
- "What codes are stored in the parking brake and ABS modules?"
- "Did you find water or corrosion at the parking brake module?"
- "Are my pads actually worn, or is this an electrical problem?"
- "What's the warranty on the repair?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes. Recall work is free, and a stuck parking brake is a safety issue you can't live with. A regular pad job is modest. Just make sure the shop fixes the real cause and doesn't sell you brakes for an electrical fault.
