Push the button, hear a click (or nothing at all), and your Cherokee just sits there. Annoying, but the fix is usually simple. Here's how to narrow it down before you pay for parts you don't need.
Which Cherokees this covers
This is about the 2014-2023 KL-generation Cherokee with the 2.4L, 3.2L V6 or 2.0L turbo. The redesigned 2026 Cherokee is a hybrid with a very different electrical setup. If yours is a 2026 and won't start, it's under warranty, so let the dealer handle it.
What the noise is telling you
| What you hear and see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Rapid clicking, dim dash lights | Dead or weak battery |
| One loud click, bright dash lights, no crank | Starter, or a bad connection to it |
| Nothing at all, no lights | Dead battery or a loose or corroded terminal |
| Cranks fine but won't fire | Not a starting-system problem. Think fuel, ignition or sensors |
| Whirring or fast spinning noise | Starter not engaging (RepairPal lists this as a starter symptom) |
RepairPal notes that a low battery, corroded battery terminals or a bad neutral safety switch can all look exactly like a bad starter. That's why you check the cheap stuff first.
What it costs (RepairPal estimates, shop prices)
| Repair | Cherokee years | Estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Starter replacement | 2020-2022 | $472-$813 |
| Starter replacement | 2023 | $815-$1,263 |
| Starter replacement | 2014 | $449-$512 |
| Battery replacement | 2020, 2022, 2023 | $537-$571 |
| Battery replacement | 2015 | $777-$811 |
| Battery replacement | 2014, 2016-2019 | $922-$956 |
RepairPal doesn't list a 2015-2019 starter figure, so get those quoted. Why is the battery so pricey on some years? The cost includes labor, and on many Cherokees the battery is harder to reach than you'd expect. Doing it yourself saves a lot if you're handy and your battery is easy to get to.
Easy things to try first
- Get the battery tested. Most parts stores do it free. RepairPal puts typical battery life around four years.
- Check the terminals. Wiggle the clamps. If one moves, tighten it. White or green crust? Clean it with a wire brush.
- Try the shifter. Make sure it's firmly in Park, or try starting in Neutral. A finicky neutral safety switch can block cranking.
- Check the key fob battery. On push-button Cherokees, a weak fob can stop the car from recognizing the key. Hold the fob right against the start button and try again.
- Jump it. If it starts right up with a jump, the battery or charging system is your suspect, not the starter.
Recalls and bulletins worth knowing
- 2019 Cherokee 2.4L stalling recall: Consumer Reports covered a recall of 86,053 2019 Cherokees with the 2.4L engine. A software problem could make the engine stall as you slow to a stop. Dealers update the powertrain software for free. If your 2019 2.4L stalls and then has trouble restarting, check this first.
- TSB 08-094-14 (2014-2015): Some early Cherokees needed an electronic steering lock software update when the engine wouldn't start on the first try. That bulletin was written for international-market trucks, but it's a good example of why a dealer scan is worth it on a strange intermittent no-start.
What to ask the shop before paying
- "Did you load-test the battery and check the charging system?"
- "Did you check voltage at the starter when it clicks?"
- "Is the new starter new or remanufactured, and what's the warranty?"
- "Does my Cherokee use an AGM battery because of stop-start?"
- "Are there open recalls on my VIN?"
Is it worth fixing?
Yes. A battery or starter is a routine repair on any Cherokee, and the SUV is worth far more running than not. Just get the battery tested before buying a starter, since that alone saves plenty of people a few hundred bucks.
