The fifth-generation Grand Cherokee (the WL, sold as the 2022 and newer two-row model, plus the three-row Grand Cherokee L) is a big step up in tech. Brakes are no exception. That's great when everything works, but it also means a "simple" brake job is a little less simple, and a little more expensive, than on the Jeep you might have owned before.
What a brake job costs
| Model years | RepairPal brake pad estimate |
|---|---|
| 2025 Grand Cherokee | $339-$396 |
| 2022-2024 Grand Cherokee | $660-$717 |
| 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee | $428-$485 |
| 2008-2010 Grand Cherokee | $143-$200 |
RepairPal notes pads are always replaced in pairs and rotors should be inspected each time. If rotors need replacing, expect the total to climb. Ask whether the quote is one axle or both, because that changes everything.
Why the newer Jeep needs extra care
- Electronic parking brake (EPB). The rear calipers have motors. A shop has to retract them with a scan tool before compressing the pistons. Skip that step and you can wreck a caliper.
- Electronic brake booster on some versions. One 2024 owner told NHTSA in June 2026 that a dealer skipped the required electronic "scan bleed" of the brake booster and ABS modules after service, leaving air in the system. If your Jeep gets a brake fluid flush, ask if they'll do the scan-tool bleed procedure.
- Brake vacuum pump (2022). Bulletin 9004433 covers DTC P258B, electronic vacuum pump performance, and tells techs to run the full diagnostic before replacing the pump because many returned pumps had no fault found.
The parking brake complaints
Several 2022 Grand Cherokee owners reported electronic parking brake problems to NHTSA:
- A 2022 owner said the parking brake applied by itself after shifting into park, with no warning light (March 2026).
- A 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe owner said the EPB engaged while driving, damaging actuators, calipers and rear rotors, with a total bill of $9,129.26 that Jeep declined to reimburse (April 2026).
- Stellantis bulletin S2308000141 (November 2023) covers a flashing park brake warning lamp and a "Service Park Brake" message.
Recalls worth checking while you're in for brakes
These aren't brake recalls, but they involve parts right next to your brakes and wheels, and they're free:
| Recall | Years | Issue |
|---|---|---|
| 24V132000 | 2022-2023 Grand Cherokee | Upper control arm ball joint and steering knuckle can separate; dealers replace the upper control arm pinch bolts |
| 24V131000 | 2024 Grand Cherokee | Improperly machined steering knuckle can separate from the ball joint |
| 23V413000 / 26V051000 / 26V562000 | 2022-2023 Grand Cherokee | Rear coil springs may be installed wrong and detach; interim letters mailed September 2026 for the latest campaign |
Signs you need brakes
- Squealing that doesn't go away after the first few stops of the day
- Grinding, which means metal-on-metal
- A pulsing pedal or shaking wheel when slowing from highway speed
- Any red brake warning, "Service Park Brake" or ABS light
DIY or shop?
Front pads are a doable driveway job with jack stands and a torque wrench. Rear pads need a scan tool that can put the Jeep's EPB in service mode. If you don't have one, the rears belong at a shop. Brake fluid work on the electronic booster setups also calls for a scan tool bleed.
What to ask before paying
- "Is this price for one axle or both? Rotors included?"
- "Will you use a scan tool to retract the electronic parking brake?"
- "If you're flushing fluid, will you do the scan-tool bleed?"
- "Are my recalls (24V132000, 24V131000, the rear spring campaigns) done?"
Is it worth it?
Yes. A Grand Cherokee from 2022 or newer is worth far more than a brake job, and brakes aren't a place to cut corners. Just shop the price, since quotes for this generation run high. More help is on the Jeep Grand Cherokee repair page.
