If you own a Wrangler, there's a decent chance you know the sound. A little tick on the highway, and a week later there's a crack wandering across the glass. Some owners say they're on their second or third windshield. You're not imagining that people complain about this a lot.

The windshield lawsuit, in plain English

A class action called Reinkraut v. FCA US LLC is in federal court in New Jersey. It covers 2016-and-newer Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators, and later filings name some Grand Cherokees too. Owners allege the windshields chip, crack or break from small pebbles, from using the defroster, or from temperature changes. One plaintiff says he paid extra for the optional Gorilla Glass windshield and it didn't hold up.

In September 2024 the judge dismissed several state-law claims but let owners amend and refile them. FCA has argued, among other things, that its warranty is fair. As of the last report we found, the case was still going and nothing had been paid out. So don't hold off on a cracked windshield waiting for a settlement.

Repair or replace?

DamageUsuallyTypical cost (AAA)
Chip smaller than a quarterRepair$60-$100
Short crack, under about 3 inchesOften repairable$100-$150
Crack longer than about 3 inchesReplace$250-$1,500+
Damage at the edge, or in the camera areaReplace$250-$1,500+
Multiple chips in your line of sightReplace$250-$1,500+
ADAS camera calibration after replacementNeeded if equippedAbout $360

AAA also notes that repairs may not hold as well on windshields older than five years, so replacement can be the better call on an older Jeep.

The camera calibration part

If your Wrangler has forward collision warning or other driver-assist features that use a camera at the top of the windshield, that camera has to be moved to the new glass and recalibrated. In AAA's research on driver-assist repair costs, calibrating the windshield camera averaged $360 and made up about a quarter of an average windshield replacement bill of about $1,440. Ask any glass shop whether calibration is included before you book.

How insurance fits in

  • Comprehensive coverage usually pays for windshield damage from rocks or debris, minus your deductible.
  • Zero-deductible glass coverage is available to drivers with full coverage in some states, and AAA calls out Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina.
  • Be careful with assignment of benefits. AAA warns about shops that bill your insurer directly without your approval at each step. Read anything you sign.

Why Wranglers seem to crack more

The Wrangler's windshield stands nearly upright, so it meets rocks and bugs head-on instead of at an angle. Big tires on the vehicle in front of you, gravel roads and following closely all raise the odds. That doesn't settle the lawsuit's argument about the glass itself, but it's a real factor you can control.

  • Leave more following distance behind trucks and lifted vehicles.
  • Slow down on gravel and freshly chip-sealed roads.
  • Don't blast hot defrost on an ice-cold windshield with an existing chip. Rapid temperature changes can run a small chip into a crack.

What to ask the glass shop

  • "Is this OEM or aftermarket glass, and does it fit my camera bracket?"
  • "Is ADAS calibration included, and is it static or dynamic?"
  • "How long before I can drive after the install?"
  • "Will you bill my insurance, and what will I owe?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. A chip repair is cheap, and a cracked windshield can get you a ticket, fail an inspection in some states, and make the Jeep less safe. Repair early, replace when you have to, and get the camera calibrated.
