A tiny rock ding on the highway, and a week later there's a crack running halfway across your view. Telluride owners have been complaining about exactly this since the first model year. Whether it's bad luck or bad glass is what the lawyers are arguing about. Meanwhile, you need to see out of your car.

What owners report paying

TellurideWhereReported total
2024 X-Line X-Pro PrestigeSafelite, Texas$1,029, including calibration
2021 EX AWDThrough the dealerAbout $1,400 ($1,024 glass + $185 install + $185 calibration)
2024 Prestige X-LineNot statedOver $2,000 after calibration
2020 TellurideDealer quote, per a lawsuit plaintiffAbout $1,000

These are owner reports from the Telluride Forum and a CarComplaints write-up of the lawsuit, not official prices. Trim level matters, since the glass and camera setup differ.

Why calibration adds to the bill

The Telluride's forward safety camera looks through the windshield. Safelite says it recalibrates the Telluride's advanced safety systems after a windshield replacement so features like automatic emergency braking and lane assist work properly. One owner was charged $185 for that step on its own. If a shop quotes you a price without calibration, ask why.

The class action and Kia's goodwill offer

Owners sued Kia in 2020 (Sanchez et al. v. Kia Motors America, US District Court, Central District of California, case 8:20-cv-01604). They claim Telluride windshields crack and chip too easily, that Kia knew by 2019, and that replacement windshields were just as fragile. These are allegations, not court findings.

In a November 4, 2019 letter, Kia offered to replace chipped or cracked Telluride windshields as a goodwill gesture while it investigated. Plaintiffs say many owners never got the letter. A judge later certified classes in 10 states:

  • 2020-2022 Tellurides: California, Iowa, North Carolina
  • 2020-2023 Tellurides: Georgia, Indiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia

Kia's 2020 warranty excludes glass damage from "outside influence," which is how most cracks get denied. As of the latest reports we found, Kia had asked the court for summary judgment, with a hearing set for January 23, 2026. There's been no recall for the windshields.

Repair the chip, or replace?

  • Small chip, no cracks running from it: Get it filled fast. A chip repair is far cheaper than glass and stops it from spreading.
  • Crack longer than a few inches, or in the driver's line of sight: Plan on replacement.
  • Crack near the camera area at the top center: Replacement plus calibration.
  • Crack reaching the edge of the glass: These tend to keep spreading. Don't wait.

How to keep the bill down

  • Call your insurer first. Glass usually falls under comprehensive coverage, and some states and policies have low or zero glass deductibles. Owners point out it varies by state.
  • Ask Kia before you pay. Call Kia customer care, mention the 2019 goodwill letter, and get any answer in writing. One forum member's advice: keep any letter Kia gives you.
  • Keep every receipt and photo. If you're in a certified state and the case pays out, you'll want proof.
  • Compare a glass shop and the dealer. Most dealers subcontract glass work anyway, owners say.

What to ask the glass shop

  • "Is this OEM glass or aftermarket, and does it fit the camera bracket correctly?"
  • "Is calibration included, and will you show me it passed?"
  • "Do you bill my insurance directly?"
  • "What's the warranty on leaks and the install?"

Is it worth fixing?

You don't get a choice here: a cracked windshield blocks your view, can fail inspection, and the glass is part of how the roof holds up in a rollover. Fix it, but make insurance and Kia say no before you pay full price. Parked a lot on hills? Also read our Telluride rollaway recall guide, or browse the Kia Telluride repair page.
