Picture this. You pull away from a light and the Rogue shudders like it's driving over a rumble strip that isn't there. Or the engine revs up and the SUV takes a beat to catch up. Maybe there's a new whine at highway speed. If that sounds familiar, you're in a very big club of Rogue owners.
What a CVT is, in one paragraph
Instead of fixed gears, a CVT (continuously variable transmission) uses a steel belt running between two pulleys that change size. It's smooth and good on gas when it's healthy. When it's worn or the fluid is tired, you get judder, slipping, whining and hesitation. The Rogue has used a CVT for years, which is why "Rogue transmission" is such a common search.
Signs your CVT is in trouble
- Shudder or judder when pulling away gently or cruising at low speed.
- Revs climb but speed doesn't follow right away. That feels like slipping.
- Whine or hum that rises with speed.
- Hesitation or a delay when you shift into Drive or Reverse.
- Limp mode: the Rogue suddenly won't accelerate hard, often with a warning light.
- Check engine light with transmission codes. A cheap code reader tells you whether it's a CVT code or something else.
Which Rogues got extended CVT coverage
| Vehicle | Model years | CVT coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Nissan Rogue (T32) | 2014-2018 | Extended from 5 years/60,000 miles to 7 years/84,000 miles |
| Nissan Rogue Select | 2015 | Same extension |
| Nissan Pathfinder | 2015-2018 | Same extension |
| Rogue 2019 and newer | Not part of this extension. Normal powertrain warranty applies |
Nissan's bulletin says the extension covers the CVT assembly and its internal parts, gaskets and seals, the valve body, the torque converter, the cooler kit where it applies, and transmission computer reprogramming. Dealers verify it by VIN, and owners who opted out of the class action settlement may not be covered. It doesn't apply to Rogues sold or registered in Canada or Mexico.
Here's the catch in 2026. Seven years from the in-service date means even a 2018 Rogue bought new in 2018 ran out of this coverage in 2025. If yours was first sold late, or sat on a lot for a while, it's worth a VIN check, but don't count on it.
What it costs
| Repair | Estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| CVT fluid change, 2014-2020 Rogue | $160-$188 (RepairPal) | Cheapest thing you can do |
| CVT fluid change, 2021 Rogue | $210-$267 (RepairPal) | |
| CVT fluid change, 2022-2025 Rogue | $243-$300 (RepairPal) | |
| CVT replacement at a dealer, 2020 Rogue | $6,055-$6,511 (KBB, Columbus, Ohio area) | About $4,547-$4,877 parts and $1,508-$1,634 labor |
| Used or rebuilt CVT at an independent shop | Varies a lot | Ask about mileage and warranty on the unit |
Easy things to try first
- Check for software updates. Ask the dealer whether there's a transmission computer update for your VIN. Nissan's own CVT coverage lists transmission computer reprogramming as a covered repair, so software is part of the fix.
- Ask when the CVT fluid was last changed. If the answer is "never" on a high-mile Rogue, a fluid change with genuine Nissan CVT fluid is cheap and sometimes helps mild judder. It won't fix a worn belt or pulleys.
- Get the codes read before anyone quotes you a transmission. A bad sensor or a weak battery can cause weird shifting complaints too.
What to ask before you pay
- "Is my VIN covered by the 7-year/84,000-mile CVT extension, or any other campaign?"
- "Did you check for transmission computer updates?"
- "Is this quote for a new, remanufactured or used CVT, and what warranty comes with it?"
- "Does the price include fluid, the cooler and any reprogramming?"
- "Can you show me the codes and the fluid condition?"
Fix it or sell it?
Do some quick math. If the Rogue is worth comfortably more than the repair and the rest of it is solid (no rust, tires and brakes OK), a replacement CVT with a real warranty can buy you years. If it's a high-mile 2014-2016 Rogue where a $6,000 dealer quote is close to what the whole SUV is worth, a used or remanufactured CVT from a reputable independent shop, or selling it as-is and moving on, usually makes more sense. Just tell the buyer about the transmission. Honesty saves you a headache later.
