The Series 6 came out in September 2020. It's a good watch that still tracks workouts, sleep and blood oxygen just fine. But it's also six years old, and Apple stopped bringing it new watchOS versions this year. So before you hand over $299 or more for a cracked screen, it's worth doing a little math.

What Apple charges for a Series 6

Apple doesn't sell a "screen only" repair for Apple Watch. A cracked screen falls under Other damage, and the price depends on the case your watch has.

Series 6 versionApple price (cracked screen / other damage)With AppleCare+
Aluminum, GPS (incl. Nike)$299$69
Aluminum, GPS + Cellular (incl. Nike)$349$69
Stainless steel, GPS + Cellular$399$69
Hermès (stainless steel)$399$79
Edition (titanium)$499$79
Battery service (any version)$99$0 below 80% health

Prices are the same for the 40mm and 44mm sizes. Apple inspects the watch first, so the final number can change if it finds more damage. Tax applies, and a shipping fee may apply if Apple has to mail it.

Is it just the glass, or the display too?

On a Series 6 the front glass and the OLED display are one part. So even a hairline crack means the whole display assembly gets swapped. Still, how bad it is tells you how fast you need to act:

  • Tiny chip at the edge, picture fine: cosmetic for now. But a cracked watch is no longer sealed, so skip the pool and the shower until it's fixed.
  • Cracks across the screen, touch still works: fix it or replace the watch soon. Glass splinters near your wrist are no fun.
  • Dead spots, ghost taps, lines or a black screen: the display itself is damaged.
  • Screen pushed up or lifting from the case: stop charging it. That can be a swollen battery underneath.

What about the old Series 6 blank screen program?

In 2022 Apple ran a free repair program for some 40mm Series 6 watches made between April and September 2021 whose screens went permanently blank. Coverage lasted two years from the first retail sale, and Apple's program page now says it has ended. So if your screen went black on its own today, you're looking at regular repair pricing, not a free fix.

DIY: cheaper, but not easy

iFixit sells a Series 6 screen for $149.99 (or $159.99 as a Fix Kit with tools) in both 40mm and 44mm. That's about half of Apple's lowest price. The catch: the screen is glued to the case, the cables are tiny, and iFixit says to plan for 45 minutes to 2 hours with heat, picks and patience. Tear a display cable and you've bought a second screen.

The watchOS 27 problem

This is the part people miss. Apple's watchOS 27, released this year, dropped the Series 6 along with the Series 7, Series 8, SE (2nd generation) and the first Ultra. Apple says these watches will still get security updates and still pair with current iPhones. But no new features are coming.

That doesn't make your watch useless. It does mean a $299 to $499 repair goes into a watch that's at the end of its feature updates.

What to ask before you pay anyone

  • Is this a genuine Apple display or a third-party part? Get it in writing.
  • Will the watch still be water resistant after the repair?
  • Does the warranty cover touch problems and dead pixels?
  • Is the quote the total, including tax and shipping?
  • Can I check touch in every corner and the Digital Crown before I pay?

Before you send it to Apple

  • Unpair the watch from your iPhone in the Watch app. That backs it up, erases it and removes Activation Lock so Apple can service it.
  • Take the band off and keep it at home.
  • Apple can send a prepaid box if a store isn't close. With AppleCare+, ask about Express Replacement, where Apple ships a replacement before you send yours back.

Is it worth fixing?

With AppleCare+, yes. $69 or $79 for a like-new watch is easy.

Without it, it depends on the case. For an aluminum GPS Series 6, $299 is a lot to put into a 2020 watch that no longer gets new watchOS versions. Many people will be happier putting that money toward a newer model. For a stainless or titanium watch you love, or one with a band collection you've built around it, paying Apple can make sense. Just go in knowing the software clock is ticking.
