Picture this: your Model Y is barely two years old, and the tire shop is showing you the inside edge of the front tires worn down to the cords. You're not unlucky, and you're definitely not alone. Here's what's going on and how to slow it down.
Why Model Y tires wear faster
TSLNA's 2026 tire guide puts it plainly: the Model Y weighs about 4,400 pounds, has instant torque the moment you touch the pedal, and leaves the factory on soft, low-rolling-resistance tires. Put those together and the tread goes quicker. The same guide cites shop data and Consumer Reports testing suggesting EVs wear tires roughly 20% faster than gas cars on average.
Driving style matters a lot here. Launching from every red light is fun. It is also expensive.
Tesla's recommended tires (2020-2024 Model Y, North America)
| Wheel | Size | Tesla-listed tires |
|---|---|---|
| 19 inch | 255/45R19 (all four) | Continental ProContact RX, Pirelli Scorpion M+S |
| 20 inch | 255/40R20 (all four) | Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 M+S |
| 21 inch | 255/35R21 front, 275/35R21 rear | Hankook Ion Evo AS SUV, Pirelli P Zero 4 (summer) |
The 21 inch setup is staggered, with wider tires in back. That means you can't swap front and rear on those cars, which is one reason Performance owners go through rears faster. Tesla also notes the P Zero 4 summer tire isn't recommended for cold climates. The "T0" or "T1" mark on the sidewall means the tire was built to Tesla's spec, and many of those have sound-deadening foam inside.
What it costs
| Job | Typical cost (TSLNA 2026 estimates) |
|---|---|
| Set of 4, Model Y 19 to 20 inch, installed | $1,500 to $2,000 |
| Set of 4, Performance, installed | $1,900 to $2,500 |
| Acoustic foam tires | About $50 to $100 more per tire |
| Rotation | $40 to $120, often free with a tire purchase |
| Four-wheel alignment | About $150 to $275 |
Expect the high end at a Tesla Service Center and the low end at big independent tire stores.
How to tell what's wrong
- Even wear across the tread, just low: normal wear. Replace once any groove hits 4/32 inch, which is Tesla's guideline.
- Inside edges bald, middle fine: an alignment problem. Get it checked before you mount new tires.
- One axle worn far more than the other: rotations got skipped. It's common.
- Vibration at highway speed: a bent wheel, lost balance weight or a damaged tire. Get it looked at soon.
- Clunking or knocking with the uneven wear: look at the suspension too. See our Model Y suspension noise guide.
Easy ways to make tires last
- Rotate on schedule. Every 6,250 miles, or sooner if the front and rear differ by 2/32 inch. On staggered 21s, ask about side-to-side options.
- Check pressure monthly. Use the pressure on the door jamb placard, checked cold. Low pressure chews edges and costs range.
- Align with every new set, and again after a big pothole hit. TSLNA notes a misaligned Tesla can wreck new tires within a few thousand miles.
- Go easy on launches. Chill acceleration mode is your wallet's friend.
- Replace in sets when needed. On AWD cars, big tread differences between tires aren't ideal, so ask the shop what's safe for your car.
Flat tires and the missing spare
There's no spare in the trunk, so a puncture can mean a tow. A small portable compressor can get a slow nail leak to a shop. TSLNA's author also warns against sealant kits because sealant can damage the foam inside many Tesla tires, so tell the shop if a tire has foam before they plug it.
What to ask the tire shop
- "Is this the T0/T1 Tesla-spec tire or a non-Tesla tire, and does it have foam?"
- "Is the alignment included, and will you show me the before and after numbers?"
- "Do you have the right lift pads for a Tesla?"
- "Is rotation free for the life of the tires?"
Is it worth fixing?
Tires aren't optional, but how much you pay is. Rotate on time, align with new tires, and don't buy summer tires if you see snow. Those three habits do more for your tire budget than any coupon.
