Big truck, big brakes, big noise. A lot of third-generation Tundra owners have spent their first year with a truck that squeals like a shopping cart every time they back out of the driveway. The good news is that this one is a known issue, Toyota has a defined fix, and on a young truck it shouldn't cost you anything.

The squeal: what Toyota's bulletin says

Toyota's T-SB-0043-24 (revised July 2024) applies to the 2022-2024 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid and the 2023-2024 Sequoia Hybrid. It describes front brakes that "produce a squealing noise when driving forward or in reverse." Here's what the repair swaps out:

PartOld part numberNew part numberQty
Front brake disc (rotor)43512-0C03043512-0C0402
Front pad kit04465-0258004465-340401
Front anti-squeal shim kit04945-0233004945-0C0601
Front fitting kit (anti-rattle springs)04947-0219004947-0C0301

In other words, this isn't a squirt of brake grease. It's new rotors, new pads and new hardware on the front axle. In February 2025 Toyota marked that bulletin obsolete and pointed dealers to T-SB-0022-25, so a dealer should be working from the newer one.

Owners have reported parts delays. One 2022 owner told NHTSA in July 2024 that they waited nearly two months for parts after the TSB came out, and another said in March 2025 that they'd paid out of pocket for pads and turned rotors at 22,000 miles before learning about the updated part numbers.

Shaking when you brake: a different problem

NHTSA complaints for 2022-2024 Tundras also describe a pulsing pedal or a shaking steering wheel when slowing from highway speed. Examples: rotors "warped at 30,000 miles" on a 2022, rotors replaced once with severe vibration continuing at 50-60 mph on another 2022, and a 2024 that needed front and rear rotors and pads at about 24,000 miles. Shake usually means uneven rotor thickness or pad material buildup. That's normally wear, not a warranty defect, unless it shows up early and your dealer agrees it's a parts issue.

What Tundra brake work costs

How to tell what you've got

  • High-pitched squeal at low speed, forward or reverse, since nearly new: classic TSB squeal. Go to the dealer.
  • Pulsing pedal or shaking wheel at highway speeds: rotor problem. Have the shop measure rotor runout and thickness.
  • Grinding: pads are down to metal. Stop driving it hard and get it in now.
  • Hard pedal or "low brake power" message: don't mess around. One 2024 owner reported a brake vacuum pump failure at 46,000 miles with that exact warning.

DIY or shop?

A front pad and rotor job on a Tundra is doable at home with jack stands, a torque wrench and a big piston spreader (Toyota's bulletin lists a wide-type spreader tool). But if you're inside 36,000 miles and the squeal matches the bulletin, there's no reason to DIY. Let Toyota pay for it.

What to ask the dealer

  • "Does T-SB-0022-25 (or T-SB-0043-24) apply to my VIN?"
  • "Are you installing the new part numbers for pads, shims and rotors?"
  • "Are recalls 22V661000 and 23V566000 done on my truck?"
  • "If it's out of warranty, can you show me rotor measurements before replacing them?"

Is it worth fixing?

Absolutely. The fix is inexpensive or free on most of these trucks, and quiet, smooth brakes on a full-size pickup are a safety item, not a luxury. More Tundra help is on the Toyota Tundra repair page.
