P0341: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
The camshaft position sensor on bank 1 is sending a signal that is out of range, erratic or out of step with the crank signal.
What P0341 means
P0341 means the camshaft position signal is there, but the computer does not like what it sees. It may be weak, noisy, missing pulses, or arriving at the wrong moment compared to the crank signal. RepairPal explains that it sets when the signal is out of its specified range or interrupted, and lists a bad sensor, faulty wiring or connections, a defective crank sensor and rough running as causes. A timing chain that has stretched or a belt that jumped a tooth can shift the cam signal enough to trigger this code, so it often appears with P0016. If the code showed up right after timing belt work, the installation should be checked first. Shops look at the cam and crank waveforms together on a scope to see whether the problem is the signal itself or the timing relationship. A clean signal at the wrong time points to mechanical timing, while a messy signal points to the sensor or wiring.
Common symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Long cranking before starting
- Stalling or hesitation
- Misfire or rough running
- Lower fuel economy
Most common causes
- Failing camshaft position sensor
- Timing chain or belt stretched or off by a tooth
- Damaged cam reluctor
- Wiring interference or poor connection
- Faulty crankshaft position sensor
What to check yourself first
If the code appeared right after a timing belt job, the belt may be off by a tooth; return to the shop that did it. Check the sensor connector for oil. Listen for a rattle on cold start, which can point to a worn timing chain.
Typical fixes and what they cost
| Fix | Typical cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Replace camshaft position sensor | $224-$326 | When the sensor waveform is weak or erratic. |
| Replace timing chain | $2,120-$2,764 | If a stretched chain is moving cam timing out of range. |
| Replace timing belt | $918-$1,338 | On belt engines, if the belt jumped a tooth or is due. |
| Electrical diagnosis to find a wiring or connector fault | $122-$179 | For a loose or contaminated connector. |
Typical US price ranges for parts and labor, not quotes. Your shop should confirm the cause with a diagnostic before replacing parts.
