The Series 10 came out in September 2024 with Apple's biggest Apple Watch screen at the time and a thinner case. That bigger, wide-angle OLED looks great. It's also more glass to hit a doorframe with. Here's what a crack costs.

What Apple charges for a Series 10

A cracked screen counts as Other damage at Apple. Price depends on the case, not the size, so 42mm and 46mm cost the same.

Series 10 versionApple priceWith AppleCare+
Aluminum, GPS$299$69
Aluminum, GPS + Cellular$349$69
Titanium, GPS + Cellular$399$69
Hermès (titanium)$399$79
Battery service (any version)$99$0 below 80% health

Apple inspects the watch first, so extra damage (a bent case, water inside) can change the quote. Tax applies, and shipping fees may apply for mail-in service.

Ion-X glass vs. sapphire

Apple uses different front glass depending on the case. Aluminum Series 10 models have Ion-X glass. Titanium models have sapphire crystal, which resists scratches much better. Both can crack from a hard hit, and both get the same "Other damage" treatment at Apple. The titanium repair costs more because the whole watch costs more.

How bad is it?

  • Small chip near the edge, everything works: cosmetic for now, but the water seal is broken. Skip swimming and showers.
  • Cracks across the screen: fix it soon. Sharp edges near your wrist are no joke.
  • Dead touch zones, ghost taps, green lines or black blotches: the OLED panel is damaged.
  • Screen lifting off the case: stop charging. A swollen battery can push the screen up.

Why DIY is a gamble on this model

iFixit sells Series 10 screens for $219.99 in both 42mm and 46mm. On paper that saves $80 on aluminum and $180 on titanium. But iFixit's own teardown of the Series 10 found the display is held in with a lot of adhesive, and the display cable layout means getting the screen out takes nearly complete disassembly. iFixit gave the watch a repairability score of 3 out of 10.

In other words, this isn't a beginner job. If you tear a cable or crack the new screen, you'll end up paying Apple anyway, plus the cost of the part you broke.

Easy things to check first

  • Peel off the screen protector if you have one. A cracked protector over a perfect screen is the best kind of bad news.
  • Wipe it down. A mark that looks like a scratch on sapphire can be metal or paint transfer.
  • Force restart if touch is acting up but the glass looks fine: hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds.

What to ask before you pay

  • Is it a genuine Apple display?
  • Will you test touch, the Digital Crown, Apple Pay and the sensors before I pay?
  • What warranty comes with the repair?
  • Is the quote final, including tax and shipping?

Before you send it to Apple

Unpair the watch in the Watch app on your iPhone. That backs it up, erases it and removes Activation Lock. Remove the band. With AppleCare+, ask about Express Replacement so Apple can send a replacement before you ship yours.

Is it worth fixing?

Yes, in most cases. The Series 10 is still supported by watchOS 27, Apple's current watch software, so it's still getting new features. Apple said the new features need the power of Series 9 and later, and the Series 10 qualifies.

  • With AppleCare+: $69 or $79. Easy yes.
  • Aluminum without AppleCare+: $299 or $349 is fair for a watch this recent.
  • Titanium without AppleCare+: $399 hurts, but it's still well under the price of a new titanium watch.
