The second-generation Trax (2024 and newer) has a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder and engine auto stop/start. Cars with stop/start lean hard on the 12-volt battery, which is why they come with AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries instead of the cheaper flooded kind. AGM batteries handle frequent restarts better, but they cost more. That's the main reason a Trax battery bill can be bigger than you'd guess for a car this size.

Signs your Trax battery is the problem

  • Slow or labored cranking, especially on cold mornings.
  • Auto stop/start stops working. Many cars disable it when the battery's charge is low, so a stop/start feature that quits can be an early hint.
  • A battery or charging warning on the dash.
  • The car won't start at all, but a jump gets it going.
  • The battery is more than a few years old and has been through a hot summer. Heat is rough on batteries.

When it's NOT the battery

This is the important part for 2024 Trax owners. A lot of what looks like "electrical trouble" on this car is software, not a weak battery.

As of October 2026, NHTSA lists 178 complaints for the 2024 Trax, and 66 of them are tagged electrical system, the biggest category by far. The most common theme is the digital instrument cluster and center screen going black, sometimes while driving. GM recalled certain 2024 Trax (plus Buick Encore GX and Envista) under recall 23V744 because the Virtual Cockpit Unit software can make the instrument display go blank at startup or while driving. The fix is a free software update at a dealer or over the air.

Some owners report that after the recall work, their screens still black out, and a few describe dealers disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to bring the screens back. That reset can make it feel like a battery problem when it really isn't.

Other 2024 owners describe the car shutting down while driving, then needing a jump to restart. One 2025 owner reported a shop diagnosed a failed alternator inside the warranty period. Those are charging system or electrical faults, and they're warranty work, not a $250 battery swap.

Easy things to try first

  • Get a free battery test. Most auto parts stores will test it in the parking lot. Ask for a printout.
  • Clean the terminals. White or green crust on the posts can block current. Clean it off with a terminal brush (battery off, negative cable first).
  • Check what's left on. One owner reported the radio kept playing after the car was turned off. A dome light or accessory that stays on overnight can drain a healthy battery.
  • Drive it. Short trips with lots of stop/start don't give the battery much time to recharge. A 30-minute highway drive helps.

DIY or shop?

Replacing the battery yourself is doable if you're comfortable with basic tools. The catch is that some newer cars need a module reset or relearn after the battery has been disconnected, and the shop will know if your Trax does. That's part of what the labor charge pays for.

What to ask the shop

  • "Can I see the test printout showing the battery failed?"
  • "Is this an AGM battery that matches the original spec?"
  • "Is it covered under my 3-year/36,000-mile warranty?"
  • "Did you check the alternator and look for parasitic drain?"
  • "Are there open recalls or software updates for my VIN?"

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. A battery is a normal wear item, and on a Trax it's a few hundred dollars. Just make sure you're replacing the right thing. If your screens are blacking out or the car is shutting off while driving, push for a dealer diagnosis under warranty before buying a battery you might not need.
