The second-generation Trax (2024 and newer) is a cheap, roomy little crossover, and its brakes are refreshingly normal. GM gives every trim four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, so there are no old-school rear drums to fuss with. That means a pad job here is quick, the parts are cheap, and you have plenty of shops to choose from.

What a Trax brake job costs

Job (2024-2026 Trax)Who does itTypical cost
Pads, one axleIndependent shop (RepairPal estimate)$296 to $353
Pads, one axleDealer (KBB, Columbus OH ZIP)$238 to $278
Pads, one axleDIYPrice of a pad set plus a few basic tools
Pads plus rotorsAny shopMore than pads alone; get it quoted in writing
Brake warnings, pedal problems, ABS faultsChevy dealerUsually $0 under the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty

Two things to notice. First, these are per-axle prices. If a shop says you need "brakes all around," roughly double it. Second, the RepairPal and KBB numbers come from different methods and locations, so treat them as a sanity check, not a coupon. If your quote is way above both, ask why.

Signs your Trax needs pads

  • A high-pitched squeal when you brake. Most pads have a small metal tab that's designed to squeal when the friction material gets thin.
  • Grinding or scraping. That usually means the pad is gone and metal is touching the rotor. Stop putting it off.
  • A longer stop than you're used to, or a pedal that feels softer.
  • Shaking in the steering wheel or pedal when braking from highway speed, which often points to rotors.
  • Brake dust building up fast on one wheel, which can mean a sticking caliper.

What Trax owners have reported

The 2024 Trax has a few brake complaints on file with NHTSA, but they're a small slice of the total. As of October 2026, NHTSA lists 178 complaints for the 2024 Trax, with 12 tagged as service brakes. Electrical complaints (66) and engine complaints (52) are much more common.

The brake reports that are there fall into a couple of buckets:

  • Noise. One owner reported a grinding noise at about 25,000 miles and said the dealer called it normal before they paid to fix it.
  • Brake warnings tied to electrical problems. A few owners describe a "Brake System Failure" message with a speed limit warning, sometimes alongside the dashboard going dark. That's not a worn pad. That's a system fault.
  • Pedal complaints. A small number of owners describe a pedal that went low or a car that didn't stop as expected.

There's also a GM bulletin (19-NA-223) that covers a clicking noise when you lightly press the brake pedal. GM describes it as a normal characteristic, so if that's your only symptom, it's probably not a defect.

Recalls to check first

There's no brake recall on the 2024-2026 Trax as of October 2026. There is a 2024 recall (23V744) for the instrument panel display going blank, which matters because a dark cluster can hide brake and ABS warnings. A 2025 recall (26V539) covers rearview camera problems. Both are free at any Chevy dealer. Plug your VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup before you pay for anything.

DIY or shop?

Front pads on a small FWD crossover like this are a reasonable DIY job if you've done brakes before. You'll need a jack, jack stands, a lug wrench, a caliper piston tool and some brake cleaner. Before you touch the rear brakes, check the service info for your exact trim. Some modern rear calipers need a special procedure or scan tool to retract the piston, and forcing it can wreck the caliper.

If any of that sounds like more than you want to deal with, a $300-ish shop bill is honestly a fair trade for not lying on your driveway in October.

What to ask the shop before you pay

  • "Is this price per axle or for both?"
  • "Do the rotors actually need replacing, or can they be reused? Can you show me the measurement?"
  • "Are these OEM (ACDelco) or aftermarket pads, and what's the warranty?"
  • "Does the rear job need any special retract procedure, and are you set up for it?"
  • "Is any of this covered under my warranty?"

Is it worth fixing?

Always. Brakes are a safety item, and on the Trax they're one of the least expensive repairs you'll face. Replace pads in pairs, have the rotors checked at the same time, and if a warning light or message shows up, go to the dealer while you're inside the 3-year/36,000-mile window.
